Burton hired as Umatilla
High School principal
The Umatilla School
District has hired Beth Bur-
ton as the new principal at
Umatilla High School, ef-
fective July 1. She will re-
place Umatilla High School
Principal Scott Depew, who
resigned earlier this spring
after accepting the assistant
principal position at Herm-
iston High School. Burton
is currently the super-
intendent for the Imbler
School District.
“I am thrilled to have
Beth Burton as a mem-
ber of our administrative
team,” Umatilla Super-
intendent Heidi Sipe said
in a press release. “She
brings with her a wealth
of experience, tremen-
dous enthusiasm and ded-
ication to student success.
I believe she’s a great ad-
dition to Umatilla High
School.”
According to the press
release, Burton earned
her bachelor’s degree in
English from Washington
State University, her mas-
ter’s degree in teaching
from George
Fox Univer-
sity and her
administrative
degree from
Western Gov-
ernors Uni-

versity. Pre-
viously, she worked as a
high school athletic direc-
tor, language arts teacher,
college prep teacher and
district test coordinator,
serving in the Molalla Riv-
er and Arlington school
districts prior to Imbler.
Her year in Imbler has
been a good learning ex-
perience and included the
orientation of many new
district employees, some
challenging building re-
pairs and serving as the
district transportation co-
ordinator, Burton said in
the press release.
“I am very excited to
be going to Umatilla be-
cause I think they have a
great team dedicated to
showing kids what they
can do,” Burton said in the
press release.

can locate. Changes would
only affect new businesses
locating in the city.
At the council’s April
meeting, members opted to
continue discussion about
the proposal at Tuesday’s
meeting to provide more
time to review the docu-
ment. Tuesday, the coun-
cilors brought questions for
city staff, but, after about
an hour, Mayor Dave Trott
suggested the councilors
submit their questions to
receive written answers
before taking up the matter
again at a subsequent meet-
ing.
“This is sort of a mo-
mentous occasion in terms
of the changes and the idea
here is to get it right,” he
said. “It doesn’t make any
difference whether it takes
one weeks, two weeks,
three weeks as long as we
get it right. I think that’s the
thing we ought to be shoot-
ing for.”
The councilors agreed to
submit their questions by
Friday and to discuss the
matter further at the June
16 meeting.
Councilman Melvin Ray
brought a long list of ques-
tions to the meeting and
said it was prudent to be
thorough.
“In my estimation, this
ordinance is probably
one of the most important
pieces of work this coun-
cil will take up for many
years,” he said. “Because
of the importance, I’m be-
ing quite critical. This will
affects the lives and busi-
nesses of people in this
town well into the foresee-
able future. My intent is to
ensure that we get it right,
and hopefully we don’t
overdo it.”
