Alvena Augusta ‘Vena’
Patterson Burd Adkins
Happy Valley
May 10, 1935-May 13, 2015
Alvena “Vena” Augus-
ta Patterson Burd Adkins
peacefully passed away
with her family at her side
on May 13th, 2015, in her
home in Happy Val-
ley, Ore. She just
celebrated her 80th
birthday on May 10.
She was born in
1935 in Portland,
Oregon, to Donald
Patterson and Al-
ice Rosa Patterson. Adkins
She attended grade
school at Trinity Luther-
an Church & School and
graduated from Jeffer-
son High School in 1953
in Portland, Oregon. She
married Lawrence “Larry”
Fougeron Burd on April 26,
1956. The family settled in
Pendleton, Oregon, in 1961
and became involved in
the community and raised
three daughters. Vena was a
homemaker, childcare pro-
vider, and bookkeeper for
Columbia Pump & Irriga-
tion and Larry Burd’s Well
Drilling.
Following a divorce,
Vena married Charles
“Chuck” Edward Adkins
on November 15, 1975.
They spent most of their
time in Hermiston, Oregon,
and Vena was employed
by the Hermiston School
District as a sign language
interpreter. Her past time

of her dogs, small farm
and gardening. After retire-
ment, Vena and Chuck trav-
eled in their motor home for
four years. They visited 48
states and stayed with fami-
ly along the way. They end-
ed up in Portland, Oregon,
and Chuck passed away in
2004. From this time on,
Vena enjoyed visiting her
children and grandchildren.
Vena was a strong life-
long supporter of volun-
teering in her community.
As a Pendleton Jayceette
member she was involved
in many community de-
velopment activities that
included the 2A Basket-
ball State tournament in
Pendleton. As a member of
the Hermiston Elks Lodge
Emblem Club, she sup-
ported the Casey Eye Insti-
tute, Meadowood Springs
Speech Camp, D.A.R.E.
National Drug Awareness
program, and other char-
ities. Later she joined the
Silver Saints Senior Group
at St. Stephens Lutheran
Church in Gladstone where
she served meals at the
Clackamas Service Center
and the Gladstone Senior
Center, along with doing
other charity activities.
Vena had a charming
and forgiving per-
sonality that attract-
ed many people. She
enjoyed any social
activity that includ-
ed her dog, such as
outside
restaurant
dining, visiting a
store, or going to the
beach. She enjoyed
card games her whole life,
including up to the point of
losing her eyesight. The joy
in her face would light up a
room while socializing and
playing cards. In her earli-
er years she loved to col-
lect things such as Beanie
Babies, magnets, earrings,
greeting cards, photos and
other things. Vena was a
longtime fan of the Pendle-
ton Round-Up and enjoyed
sharing her time there with
friends and family. Travel-
ing by motor home across
the United States was an-
other joy for Vena. She
loved being on the road.
Vena will truly be
missed by many. She had
an amazing circle of caring,
supporting and generous
friends and caregivers. We
will all miss her cute and
sweet smile and her charm-
ing, caring and brave per-
sonality.
Vena was preceded
in death by her husband,
Chuck Adkins; parents
Donald and Alice Patter-
son; brother Ron Patterson;
sister Emilie Patterson; and
dogs Patches, Buddy, Little
Guy, Princess, Suzie and
Mehling.
