MOTHER’S DAY BUFFET
May is going to be a very busy month! It’s
National Travel and Tourism Month and
National Small Business Month. A whole
week this month is set aside for each to
concentrate on the impact that travel and
tourism and small businesses have on our
local, county, regional, state, and national
economies.
And while we are talking about tourism,
we will have even more visitors in our area in
the next year or two. I recently attended the
Governor’s Conference on Tourism in
Eugene, OR. All of us in the EOVA (Eastern
Oregon Visitors Association) were excited
when the big announcement was made at
this conference that next year this event will
be held in Eastern Oregon, with the Wild
Horse Casino Hotel serving as the host hotel!
This will be good news for Boardman and
many of us in this area as we will be right on
the way for many tourism-related people
from across the state traveling to Pendleton.
We have a great opportunity to plan now for
ways to encourage them to stop in
Boardman, visit the SAGE Center, etc. on
their way to, or back from, the conference!
As I write this article, I am at the NACA
(National
Association
of
Chamber
Ambassadors) Conference in NM. While at
this event, I represented Boardman and bid
on hosting this conference in Boardman in
2017. This conference usually has 75 to
100 attendees and is the perfect size for our
community. We won the bid and will have
Chamber ambassadors from across the
country coming to Boardman in 2017!
Other activities in May include:
• Cinco de May was May 5 – we had our
own local celebration last Saturday
• A focus on nurses this week during
National Nurses Week (May 6-12), with
May 6 being designated as National
Nurses Day
• Mother’s Day is tomorrow (Sunday, May
10) so remember to recognize moms
and other women who have made a
difference in your life
• Armed Forces Day is May 16 and
Memorial Day is May 25 – both are times
to remember those who serve, or have
served, in the military, with a special
focus on those who have made the
ultimate sacrifice to protect the
freedoms we enjoy every day
• And don’t forget proms, graduations, and
weddings!
Be sure and shop local Chamber member
businesses and the Chamber’s Store at the
SAGE Center for gifts for this occasion filled
month of May!
