Mosquito spraying season has begun
West Umatilla Mosquito Con-
trol District has started spraying to
control the insects through October.
The district provides mosquito
abatement over 525 square miles of
western Umatilla County including
the cities of Hermiston, Umatilla,

The district will target areas of
standing and stagnant water where
mosquito larvae thrive. Large water
bodies will be sprayed with a heli-
copter while smaller areas will be
treated by truck mounted sprayers
or by hand.
To control adult mosquitoes,
the district uses truck-mounted
ultra-low-volume foggers. This
spraying will be done after sunset
in areas that have large populations
of adult mosquitoes. In rural areas,
aerial spraying to control adult
mosquitoes will take place when
mosquito trap collections indicate
the need for large scale spraying.
Aerial spraying for adult mosqui-
toes will be done in the early eve-
ning hours just after sunset.
If for any reason residents do
not wish to have their properties
sprayed, please call the mosquito
control hotline at 541-567-5201
and ask to be placed on the no-
spray list. This number is also
available for any questions regard-
ing the district’s mosquito control
program, or visit the district’s web
page at www.wumcd.org.
The district urges homeowners
to take steps to eliminate mosquito
breeding around their homes and
properties.

Health screenings offered
Residents can receive various
health screenings at a special event
from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday at the

ings wil be offered: a cholesterol
check for $10; cardiac risk panel, test-
ing cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL,

ac risk panel with more than 16 other
blood chemistry tests, including glu-
cose, kidney function, carbon dioxide,
liver enzymes, protein and electrolyte
levels, for $30; and a blood screening
for prostate cancer, recommended for
men over age 40, for $30. A 12-hour
fast is required for all tests. Drop-ins
