Gary Brown
La Grande
June 11, 1952-April 22, 2015
Gary Brown, 62, of
La Grande died of com-
plications of Alzheimer’s
disease April 22, 2015,
at Willowbrook Terrace
in Pendleton. The
Recitation of the
Rosary will be held
on Monday, April
27, 2015, at 10:15
a.m. at Our Lady of
the Valley Catholic
Church. The me-
morial service will Brown
begin at 11 a.m. at
the church.
Gary was born June
11, 1952, to Robert and
Ellen (Fraser) Brown in
Pendleton. They lived in
Stanfield and Hermiston,
graduating from Hermis-
ton High in 1970 with an
aptitude for the scienc-
es. He attended Eastern
Oregon State College,
now EOU, graduating in
1975 with a chemistry
degree and again in 1982
with a business degree.
His work experience in-
cluded Martin Marietta
aluminum in The Dalles,
Borden Chemical/Hexion
in La Grande as their an-
alytical chemist, quality
assurance specialist and
management trainer for
30 years, traveling exten-
sively in the U.S., Cana-
da, the UK and Australia.
His last employer was
Napa Auto for six years.
He spent one year during
his first round of col-
lege with friends in Falls
Church, Va., working at a
gas station/U-Haul rental
and playing bass guitar
in a band, St. Barnabas
Road.
Gary met his future
wife, Peg Palumbo, at a
dance at EOU in 1977.
They married in 1979 in
La Grande and made their
home there. They have
sons Matthew and Eric.
Gary had a lifetime love
of cars, restoring many
from the ground up from
literally boxes of pieces
and bolts. His prized pos-
sessions are a ’67 Cor-
vette and a ’66 Chevelle.
His mechanical aptitude
and car sense rubbed off
on Matt. His computer
savvy is instilled with
Eric. He enjoyed helping
with Boy Scouts, spend-
ing several winters
assisting in build-
ing and sleeping in
snow caves, hik-
ing Hoffer Basin,
and joining trips to
Leslie Gulch with
Troop 514. He as-
sisted both sons in
earning their Eagle
Scout award. He was also
a WWII historian.
Gary had a love for nar-
row-gauge steam trains,
earning the right to be a
fireman on the Sumpter
Valley Railroad one sum-
mer. Many family trips
to the Southwest were
made to see the old silver
and gold mining sites and
ride the steam train ex-
cursions. His other love
was anything Australian
or New Zealand. He had
often talked of the poten-
tial of moving there, but
settled on several trips to
both countries with Peg.
They also traveled to-
gether to Hawaii, Holland
and two summers ago a
cruise and land tour to
Alaska. He enjoyed his
morning coffee routine
with his friends right up
to the time he became
acutely ill. Gary was a
private, soft-spoken and
kind-hearted man. He had
a quiet intensity for fami-
ly, work and fun.
Gary is survived by his
wife, Peg of La Grande;
son Matt and fiancée Les-
lie Phillips of Portland;
son Eric and Mandy Hil-
lecke of La Grande and
parents of Hermiston;
sister Vickie Hartley of
Hermiston; brother Daryl
and wife Sue of Richland,
Wash.; aunts Jean Pinney
of Hermiston and Max-
ine Leonard of Thousand
Oaks, California; and
eight nieces and nephews.

tions to the Alzheimer’s

bowl strikes! He attended
Colfax Preschool three
days a week and made
many friends and touched
many lives. His smile was
contagious and his giggles
could turn any day into a
blessed day!

Deborah Franke
Hermiston
July 8, 1951-April 16, 2015
Deborah Franke, 63, of
Hermiston, Oregon, died
at her home Thursday
evening April 16, 2015,
from natural causes.
Born July 8,
1951, in Salem,
Ore., Debbie was
one of four chil-
dren born to Wal-
ter “Bud” and Eva
Lou Stotler. The
other children are
sister Sharon Stot- Franke
ler of Salem, Ore.,
Michael Stotler of Scio,
Ore., and Lori Soza of
Houston, Texas; all sur-
vive her. Debbie gradu-
ated from South Salem
High School in 1969.
A few years later, Deb-
bie married James “Jim”
Willits of Salem, Ore.
Debbie had two children
with Jim, daughter Tere-
sa Strubel of Salem, Ore.,
and son Edward “Eddie”
Willits of Salem, Ore.;
both survive her. Debbie
was also the very proud
grandmother of six grand-
children that survive her:
Jackson, James and Trev-
or Strubel, Jasmine Al-
lenwood, and Andrew and
Nakaia Willits, all of Sa-
lem, Ore.
In August 1983, Deb-
bie married the love of
her life, Steven Franke, in
Salem, Ore. In 1990, the
two moved to Pendleton,
Ore., where they worked
and lived until June 2003
when they moved to New
Plymouth, Idaho, where
they lived until moving to
Hermiston in October of
2010.
Besides, loving to be
with her grandchildren
and family, she loved be-
ing in the outdoors, fish-
ing, hunting, gardening,
or just driving around in
the mountains as long as
she was with Steve. Deb-
bie dearly loved spending
time with all her friends
as well.
In January of 2010,
Debbie was diag-
nosed with stage 4
breast cancer, be-
ginning a long and
brave fight to beat
it. Debbie loved
her oncologist Iyad
Hamarneh of Ken-
newick, Wash. She
also loved and ap-
preciated all her friends
and nurses at Trios Hos-
pital in Oncology and Co-
lumbia Basin Hemotolo-
gy and Oncology. Without
all of you, these last few
years may very well have
not been possible. Thank
you so much!
Although we are deep-
ly saddened by our loss of
Debbie, we are comforted
in knowing she no longer
has to suffer from the can-
cer and treatments. She
constantly
approached
her fight with a positive
attitude, never shop-
ping for sympathy. She
believed she could beat
cancer until she couldn’t.
The one wish she had was
to “just to have things be
normal.” She always did
her very best to keep life
normal in spite of the can-
cer.
There will be two cele-
bration of life services for
Debbie. The first will be 1
p.m. Saturday, April 25th
at Santiam Golf Course in
Stayton, Ore. The second
will be 1 p.m. Saturday,
May 16th at the Cleve-
land residence (the Old
Adams School) in Adams,
Ore. Preferred dress is ca-
sual. Debbie liked things
relaxed and casual so
please dress accordingly
if possible.
