TREES:
and say, ‘This is what we
did,’” she said. “It’s pretty
romantic.”
Thompson said the wa-
tershed council plans to
make more improvements
at the site in the future.
“We’re putting togeth-
er a long-range plan to
propose to the Bureau of
Reclamation for expand-
ing this effort to other
portions of this Oxbow
property,” he said. “At the
moment, we’re only treat-
ing 20 acres, but there’s
over 200 acres. There’s a
lot of things we could do
out there in addition to
planting trees. With this
plan, I suspect we’ll see
some new things happen
over the next few years
out there.”
Thompson said the 20-
acre site still requires a lot
of work to maintain, and
volunteers are still needed
to help with tasks, such as
watering and weeding and
surveying for insects.

tact Thompson, 541-667-

Last year’s tree plant-
ing was organized by the
Hermiston Chamber of
Commerce’s Leadership
Hermiston class, when
then-watershed
council
director Greg Silbernagel,
who was a member of that
year’s class, suggested the
event as the class’s annu-
al community project and
helped coordinate the ef-
fort.
“I was very pleased
with the number of volun-
teers that turned out and
the quality of work they
did,” Silbernagel said. “It
was exceptional quality.”
Leadership
Hermis-
ton facilitator Fran Rice
said she was amazed how
many people and busi-
nesses pitched in to help
with last year’s tree proj-
ect. She said it will have a
lasting impact that people
can be proud of.
“As the years go by, the
kids that helped plant can
take their kids out there

These trees, wrapped in a protective mesh covering, were planted a year ago on 20 acres of property on the Oxbow site in
Hermiston along the Umatilla River. A large volunteer effort, led by the 2014 Leadership Class, helped plant the trees, but volun-
teers are still needed to maintain the site.
