ROUNDUP:
“We have some better, old-
er kids that these guys gotta
piggyback on on the weekends
and wrestle some tournaments
(and) sometimes are a little
overwhelmed,” Riverside head
coach David Boor said. “It was
a good night. It was more of
their competition.”
Although Riverside won
each of its duals, Boor said it
was a good learning experience
for some of the younger wres-
tlers on the Riverside roster.
“What they found out was
some of the stuff that don’t work
with the older guys don’t work
at this level either,” he said.
“Sound body position and tech-
nique wins a lot of matches.”
For Irrigon, it was a tale of two
meets. Head coach Jason Dunten
said the Knights “could’ve wres-
tled better” against Riverside and
showed rather well against Echo.
He was without some of his key
guys Thursday night because of
injury.
Despite missing those wres-
tlers, Irrigon won all but one
match against Echo.

nailed a crucial fourth quarter
three-pointer, and the Vikings (9-

with a victory Thursday.
Riverside (5-14, 0-4) trailed by
11 at the half but was able to chip
the lead down to 40-38 in the fourth
before Garcia canned the triple.
Garcia led Umatilla with 13
points, while his backcourt coun-
terpart Noe Madrigal also had 13
to lead Riverside in the loss.
The seven-point defeat was
an improvement for Riverside,
which lost by 18 on Umatilla’s
homecourt earlier this month.

Hermiston dominated the
heavier weights. The Bulldogs
swept the competition from the
night’s 170-pound opener to 285
heavyweight dual. Hood River
fell behind 20-0 before Jessica
DeHart got the better of Herm-
iston’s Robert Rodriguez at 106
pounds in a 10-7 decision.
The Bulldogs responded with
ZLQVLQ¿YHRIWKHQH[WVL[PDWFK-

pin of HRV’s Angel Jones. Hood
River Valley ended the dual with
a pair of wins. First, Jorge Orte-
ga defeated Jake Palmer at 152
pounds. Then Ian Rand pinned
Julia Leiva at 160.
The Bulldogs won decisively
despite the absence of star Sam
Colbray from the Hermiston lineup.
Hood River Valley was also with-
out its state champion, as defending
126-pound medalist Christan Mar-
quez didn’t take the mat either.
Hermiston will wrap up its dual
season Thursday, when the Bull-
dogs host rival Pendleton at 7 p.m.

because the match wasn’t about wins or losses
Thursday night. It was about helping the Echo
wrestling program grow and show peers and
parents how much the athletes have improved
since November.
Echo’s wrestling schedule has been full
of road trips. The Cougars have been to Mil-

Bonanza, to Enterprise, but, until Thursday, ha-
ven’t had the chance to put on a show for the
home fans.
