Chili contest heats up Lions Club fundraiser

Bragging rights are on the
line as top chili cooks com-
pete in the Umatilla/Irrigon
Lions Chili Contest.
Anyone is welcome to enter
the contest. There is no entry
fee to compete. Contestants
are invited to bring their pot of
chili, provide a brief description
and a name for the concoction.
The top three entries, as deter-
mined by tasters attending the
event, will get prizes.
Cooks and their chili
should arrive 6 p.m. Friday
in the commons at Umatilla
High School, 1460 Seventh
St. The contest heats up at 6:30
p.m. as people arrive and pay a
tasting fee of $3.
“You can eat as much chili
as you want and then vote for
your favorite chili,” said Cathy
Putnam, who is coordinating
the Lions Club fundraiser.
The event also includes a
dessert auction. Putnam said
desserts can be dropped off at
the same time the cooks are
checking in. Due to resources
available, people are asked to
refrain from bringing desserts
requiring refrigeration.
The Umatilla/Irrigon Lions
Club recently coordinated vi-
sion screenings in Boardman,
Irrigon and Umatilla. Putnam
said the group helped pay for
glasses and examinations.
“We’re trying to decide
what other local projects we
want to do,” Putnam said.
“Our motto is, ‘We serve.’
So, whatever the community
needs, that’s what we want to
participate in.”
The Umatilla and Irrigon
Lions recently joined togeth-
er as one club. The group
meets the second and fourth
Tuesday of each month at
6:30 p.m. at Amanda’s Bar &
Grill, 610 Sixth St., Umatilla.
