Mrs. Roy Pearson and daughter
Jean made a visit to Virginia re
cently to visit relatives.
Mrs. T. J. Means left Sunday
evening for a few days visit in
Portland with her parents.
Mrs. Carrie Beitel was able to
leave the Hermiston General hos
pital Wednesday after spending
several days there.
Mrs. Walpole was a patient at
the Hermiston hospital Wednes
day.
Capt. and Mrs. William Purvis
returned Wednesday from a ten
day vacation at Walport, Oregon,
to visit at the home of her mother,
Mr. and Mrs. Jess Connor.
Corp. Rita Du Puis of Petaluma,
Calif., spent several days at the
home of her aunt, Mr. and Mrs.
Jess Connor.
Miss Bonnie Brown and W. H.
Brown of Salem spent the week
end with friends here. They for
merly made their home in Hermis
ton.
Jess Baker, who recently left
for Boise, Idaho, for induction in
to the U. S. Army, is now station
ed at Ft. Douglas, Utah, according
to word received here by Mrs. Ba
ker. Mrs. Baker is employed at
Saylor’s clothing store.
Barbara Thomas. 13-year-old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald
Thomas of Salem, passed away at
her home April 17. She is also
survived by one brother, Donald;
one sister, Shirley, both of Salem,
and her grandparents, Mr. and
Mrs. George Sale of Stanfield.

Miss Ruth Means spent the week
end in Hermiston with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Means, re
turning to college Sunday evening.
Mrs. Elmira Harvey left Thurs
day (today) for Seattle to spend a
few days visiting her mother. Mrs.
Harvey is a nurse at the Hermis-
ton General hospital.
Mrs. Ernest Skinner and baby
son returned to their home Wed-
nesday from the Hermiston Gen-
eral hospital.
Word has been received here
that Miss Grace Pearson, daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Pearson,
was married to Wayne Spencer of
Caldwell, Idaho, April 10.

turned to her home Saturday af
ter having spent the week visiting
with her sister, Mr. and Mrs. Jess
Connor.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Brown
announce the arrival of a baby son
Lawrence Ivan, weighing 5 pounds
born Monday at the Hermiston
General hospital.
Karen Spencer, five year old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sloan
Spencer, fell and broke her collar
bone Saturday. It was necessary
to have it put in a cast.
Pvt. Ted Hodge, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Olyn Hodge, returned Sun
day to Fort Ord, Calif., following
a furlough spent here. He recent
ly completed training with U. S.
Infantry. Pvt. Hodge lost little
time while in Hermiston, working
with the milk route every day.
A birthday party, honoring Miss
Arlene Hooker, was enjoyed at the

noon by the following young peo

er. After the party a 4-H Victory

Visitors here this week are Mr.
and Mrs. Gerald McKenzie and
two children. Mary Alice and Ger
ald Jr., of Richmond. Va. They
were called west bv the serious ill
ness of Mrs. McKenzie's mother.
Mrs. J. E. Dove of Portland. Mr.
McKenzie is employed in a patent
office in Richmond, having fol
lowed that business for the past
seven years. They are staying
here at the home of his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. F. C. McKenzie.

Miss Annie Lindsay has resign
ed her position as bookkeeper at
the office of the Umatilla Electric
Cooperative association. At pres
ent she is visiting in Hoquiam,
Wash., and later intends to make
a trip east with her mother, Mrs.
Dan Lindsay.
Harold Neill, Ordnance 1/c, U.
S. Navy, arrived home April 19 to
spend until May 7 with his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Neill, and
other relatives. Harold has exper
ienced many of the thrills of the
present conflict but has come
through unharmed.
Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Wolley and
family and Miss Jessie Brierley
made a trip to the valley over the
week end. Mr. and Mrs. Woolley
visited in Forest Grove and Port
land while Miss Brierley attended
to business matters in Portland.
They report that the valley is very
pretty this time of the year.
Miss Noreen Townsend, who re
cently returned to Hermiston fol
lowing several months spent in
California where she was employ
ed, expects to resume work at the
First National Bank the first of
the month. She spent the past
week end visiting friends in Port
land.
Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Neill were
pleased to receive a telephone call
and a telegram this week from
their son, Corp. Ralph Neill, from
San Francisco where he arrived
last week. Ralph was wounded
February 6 at Manila and his left
arm is still in a cast but he is
getting along nicely . He was re
turned home on a hospital ship.
Mr. and Mrs. Dan Bartlett re
turned this week following a 21,
day trip which took them east as
far as St. Marys, Ohio, where Mrs.
Bartlett visited relatives. Mr.
Bartlett visited his mother at Ord,
Neb., and other relatives in Oma
ha and Lincoln, Neb. They report
that they were greeted with win
try weather at all places, even ex
periencing a real blizzard.
Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Anderson
moved last week to La Grande
where they have leased a Union
Oil Co. station. Lynn, who has
been working at the Red & White
store here, had planned to open an
airport in Hermiston but new
plans, of course, will prevent this.
Mrs. Anderson is a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith of Her
miston.

C. E. Rally Held Here Monday
A Christian Endeavor rally was
held in the Christian church Mon
day, April 23. Six churches of the
district were represented, with
about 75 in attendance. A ban
quet was served at 7:30 p. m. by
the Women’s Council of the local
Christian church. The address of
the evening was delivered by the
minister of the Hermiston Chris
tian church on the subject, “We
Must Be the World We Want”.
The meeting closed with a recrea
tional program for the young peo
ple in the basement, and an execu
tive meeting of district officers in
the auditorium.
