“Barely enough to keep the B
and C cars rolling,” says C. R. Ma
son, service manager of the B. F.
Goodrich company.
Recapping is the only way the
average motorist can keep going,
government and industry experts
say, and motorists have been put
ting off recapping to such an ex
tent that transportation men are
worried.
If you’re an average driver, two
of the tires on your car may need
attention.
In Pittsburgh, tire men from the
office of price administration
found that on 9000 cars checked,
16,000 tires needed recapping.
In Columbus, a survey of 8000
cars showed 14,000 tires worn
close to the danger zone.

(March 1-29)
The Rubber Manufacturers’ associa
tion reports tire production, which
dropped to 2,500,000 in 1942 from 50,-
000,000 in 19 41, had risen to only 4,-
909,000 in the third quarter of last
year. Unofficial estimates of 1944 out
put are around 18,000,000, against an
original goal of 30,000,000. Industry
estimates of 1945 production run
around 22,000,000, the adjusted but
unreached goal of 1944.
The tire companies want to see more
recapping now, partly because they
want to keep motorists—future custo
mers—rolling, and partly because they
aren’t permitted to sell new tires to all
drivers. Many dealers still have top-
grade recap material, 100 per cent syn
thetic rubber. The balance, while only
60 per cent synthetic and 40 per cent
reclaim, is better than the all reclaimed
rubber “camelback” they could use
earlier in the war.
