The Lesson of the Great City of Cologne
Cologne, one of the great cities of Europe, now
lies prostrate. It was founded by the Caesars nearly
2000 years ago and has represented the advance of
civilization down through the centuries. It was a
center of government, culture, architecture, art, reli
gion and beauty, as well as manufacture and busi
ness, and the general progress of Germany. Now all
this is in rubble except its great cathedral and many
fine homes in outlying suburbs which our air forces
have protected. If San Francisco were laid flat it
would be less than the calamity that has happened to
the great Rhine city. And this is but a dot on the
map of destruction on the map of Europe from Lon
don to Stalingrad. Thus is our boasted civilization
doing to itself after a struggle upward since the Man
of Galilee. It is a struggle of right against wrong in
human relations, and we have a profound faith that
the principles of Christian civilization will survive,
and rise stronger after the battles for human liberty
have been won.
And while this is going on in Europe, we of the
most advanced nation under Christianity find our
selves contending against another—a paganistic sort
of civilization as old, which believes that the Emper
or of Japan is God. Doctrines and philosophies of
government become almost useless as we contem
plate the problems that face us. How mankind can
work out a basis of lasting peace when human beings
may live together toward a common good and a no
ble way of life, will require the use of all the good of
all the'ages, organized into righteous codes by the
greatest minds and spirits of all the nations.
