A word for the Thanksgiving Table
Thanksgiving days are here again. As we meditate on the
various phases of gratitude to an all wise Providence, we must
feel that the most important is our place in the affairs of the world.
When the pilgrims established the day, it was one of celebration
for abundant harvest and a new freedom of life and religious lib
erty they enjoyed. Wild turkeys abounded in the forests and this
bird became the principal feature of a laden table, for which,
along with the simple vegetables they were able to grow on the
new lands, they gave praise to the Divinity that was shaping their
lives and laying the foundations of a great nation.
Now, over 300 years later, we find ourselves defending their
vision and faith around the whole earth. It is this faith in their
vision and in our ability to defend the rights of men which we have
demonstrated so well the last three years, so innate in our souls
and so strong in our resources, for which we should give thanks
and devotion to the same all wise Providence that they worshiped
at their early shrines around the festive board.
Whether in the homes of all America, or in the camps of ten
million soldiers, the thoughts must be the same. We are still liv
ing for and fighting for the same rights of freedom to worship as
we please, to the same rights to say what we please, the same
rights to free enterprise, the same rights to improve the private
and general welfare, and to progress in our American way of life
under the truest democracy on earth.
Our republic, established but a century and a half ago and
founded on the principles of our earlier forefathers, now finds it
self the greatest nation in the world, while nations many centuries
old are crumbling because of the wrong theories of government.
We now realize our greatest responsibilities to humanity, perhaps
the greatest of all ages for one nation. This place in the world
must be maintained by adherence to the simple principles of free
dom of the first Thanksgiving days and the declaration of human
right by the founders of this republic.
Our prayers should be, that when the captains and kings de
part, we shall not become drunk with the sight of power, and
loose wild tongues, but will retain a humble and contrite heart,
and will still keep in awe the Lord God of Hosts. Let us thank
God that we are powerful in that our principles of liberty and
human rights have been justified, but let us also pray God that
we may remain humble before His righteousness. Though para
phrasing the Immortal Kipling, let us not become one with Nine-
vah and Tyre, lest we forget our sound principles and the prin
ciples of the Prince of Peace.
