NARROW MARGIN MAY DECIDE PRESIDENTIAL RACE
If one follows the many reports on election prospects as given by ra
dio, commentators, newspapers, poll takers, politicians on both sides,
and the public debates of the leaders, the safest conclusion at this date
is that the race between President Roosevelt and Governor Dewey is
very close. It is balancing throughout a national survey on a pivot of
one percent. The campaign is at a high pitch, and with nearly two
weeks yet to go, the results may be changed greatly by small punches
at the very last.
The fact that the president has changed from his original plan, and
will make several purely political speeches in big centers shows that he
is uneasy and the fact that Dewey is driving hard and beaming hope
fully is assurance that he expects to win. Both are placing all their
cards on the table for the voters to play with on November 7th.
Many independent dopesters say that the people themselves are not
saying much and do not appear to be much interested. Jim Farley, who
knows politics and trends about as much as any man in the nation,
says, "There is something going on that I can't quite understand. This
is a hard election to figure out.”
The solid south of 11 states with 124 electoral votes, where they still
vote against Lincoln as many others still vote against Hoover, is con
ceded to the President. The one exception is Texas which has a big
anti-administration, anti-negro democratic vote, and a strong Republi
can campaigns being waged. This state might go republican, but not
likely. West of the Rockies, California, Montana, Wyoming, Utah,
Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada are expected to give its votes to
Roosevelt, with Oregon and Washington very close. These two groups
would give the President 192 electoral votes. Colorado, Idaho. Nebras
ka, Kansas, Iowa, the two Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana,
Ohio, Michigan, New York, Main, Vermont, New Jersey, Massachu
setts and New Hampshire are claimed strongly by the republicans, and
conceded close by the democrats. These would give Dewey 219 votes.
The doubtful states are Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland. West
Virginia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Oklahoma, and the big state of
Pennsylvania, with around 130 votes. Southern Illinois is reported
two to one in favor of Dewey, which is about half of the vote of the
state and Chicago is supposed to go for Roosevelt, though the fight
against Mayor Kelly may turn that vote. In the coal region the United
Mine workers have declared for Dewey in open resolutions, and this
may throw a plurality to Dewey in Kentucky, West Virginia and Penn
sylvania. In Maryland, Baltimore is counted democratic while the
Chesapeake bay agricultural region is rated strong for Dewey. Okla
homa and Missouri are claimed by both parties. New Jersey has a row
in its democratic ranks and is conceded to Dewey. The negro vote
which is large in New York, Ohio and Illinois, and strong enough to
control a close election, is divided with several large negro newspapers
lately announced for Dewey Roosevelt received this vote nearly unan
imous in 1940.
Twenty-six states have republican governors, and these states con
trol three-fourths of the electoral college vote. The House of Repre
sentatives lacks only three votes of having a republican majority, and
the incumbents are campaigning vigorously to hold their places, along
with 14 senatorial contests, which, with the national campaign repub
lican organization well greased and in full operation all over the criti
cal areas, the race can be seen today with Dewey nosing out the old
campaigner, his opponent.___________________________________________
