With heavy runs of cattie begin
ning to come to maket. the War Food
Administration points out that cattle
slaughter regulations in no way re
strict the number that may be killed.
This fact is one that apparently has
not been understood by many people.
R. D. Taylor, State AAA chairman,
says.
Farmers may slaughter and deliver
meat from any cattle or other live
stock owned by them without any lic
ense or permit and without making
any report of such deliveries to the
government. Commercial packers and
persons who slaughter livestock ex
clusively for others on a fee basis
must obtain slaughtering licenses from
WFA and slaughterers of 50 or more
head of cattle weekly or 300 or more
livestock annually must turn in month
ly reports to WFA.
Slaughterers who kill more than 51
head of cattle weekly that produce
“Army Style” beef must set aside a
percentage for government purchase
which must, be Federally inspected.
Slaughterers must comply with OPA
regulations regarding grading of meat
and collection of ration points. “The
regulations pertain to licensing, grad
ing, set-aside for government pur
chase. and collection of ration points,”
Mr. Taylor points out. “but they do
not restrict the number of cattle that
may be slaughtered.”

Army Ordnance is supplying our
Invasion Air Forces in France and the
China-Burma-India Theatre with a
flew emergency cable cutter.
Colonel A. S. Buyers, commanding
Umatilla Ordnance Depot, explained
today that gliders, towed by aircraft,
can normally disengage the tow cable
at the proper time for landing.
Occasionally, however, an emergen
cy may arise which will require the
aircraft to disengage itself from the
glider in a hurry. For such emerg
ency situations. Ordnance developed
a fool-proof cable cutter which cuts
the tow cable instantly by an explos
ive charge.
The explocive unit is located outside
the plane and is exploded by means of
an electrical detonator within the
plane.
The cutter is for emergency use on
ly and is employed only when it is
necessary to detach the plane from the
glider tow line in order to save per-
sonnel and equipment from destruc-
tion.
The Ordnance Department. Army
Service Forces, received a letter of
commendation from the Army Air
Forces for the quick and efficient
manner in which the development,
manufacture and shipment of invas
ion explosive charge assemblies were
accomplished.

This is an
oil filter
You’d think that clean |
oil, inside a sealed
engine, would keep fairly
sanitary. But not so.
As it circulates, it picks
up more
assorted
grime than
a bunch of
fifth grade
kids playing
commando.
Q.
So oil must be cleaned, .
or the scratchy stuff it ,
pick* up would be carried 4
into close-fitting places
,
where it would be about as
beneficial as a cinder in
4
your eye.
Like the kitchen strain- |
er sketched above, the }
oil filter’s job is to trap
,
and hold unwanted lumps hi
and things. And like a
i
strainer, it eventually gets 1
so clogged up that it can’t |
function.
That’s why Shell people
occasionally urge you
to buy a new oil filter car- 1
tridge... to keep your car
from joining the parade of 1
5000 junkers that are
scrapped every day. We
don’t want that to happen.
