Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lake of Pasco
were Sunday dinner guests at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Shaw.
Mrs. C. A. Kennison, Mrs. Stewart
and Mrs. C. Kennison Jr. spent Wed­
nesday in Pendleton on business.
Mrs. Alton Kingsbury was a busi­
ness visitor in Hermiston the forepart
of the week.
Mrs. O. O. Felthouse has been con-
fined to her home due to a bad cold
since Thursday of last week.
Corporal Alvin C. Wolke, nephew of
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Alstott of Hermis­
ton, has recently graduated from the
Gunnery Department of the Armored
School at Fort Knox, Ky. Members
of his class have been trained to be­
come armorers and gun mechanics
for the lightning-fast, accurate-shoot­
ing armored divisions and tank bat­
talions.

Mrs. Chas. Shown, who has been
confined to her home due to illness
since Saturday, is improving.
Miss Zola Patten returned home
Monday after a week’s visit with her
parents at Enterprise. Miss Patten
is employed at the U. O. D.
The Hermiston Altar Society is
planning a cooked food sale for Fri­
day, May 19. The place and other de­
tails will be announced later.
Dr. A. E. Marble left Tuesday
night for Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan,
Canada, where he was called by the
death of his brother, Cress Marble.
The Girl Scout Leaders club elect­
ed the following officers at a recent
meeting held at the U. S. O. club:
Mrs. T. J. Means, president; Mrs.
Wanda Graham, vice president; and
Mrs. Al Shaw, secretary-treasurer.
Mr. and Mrs. George Harris cele­
brated their 30th wedding anniversa­
ry May 3. They have ten children,
four of whom are serving in the
armed forces. Mr. and Mrs. Harris
state that they are looking forward
to many more happy years together.
Pvt. Frank M. Price, formerly of
Echo, who was recently taken into the
service, has been sent to the Ordnance
Replacement Training Center, Aber­
deen Proving Ground, Md., where he.
will receive his basic training as an
Ordnance soldier.
Girl Scout Troop Two, accompan­
ied by their leader. Miss Thomas, and
assistant leader. Mrs. Al Shaw, made
an excursion through the experiment
station recently. Mrs. H. K. Dean
identified various plants for the
girls.
Eugene Robertson, Seaman Third
Class, is visiting this week in Hermis­
ton with his parents and other rela­
tives. He stayed in Hermiston at the
home of his sister, Mrs. Earl Watson.
“Gene” has been in the service a lit­
tle over a year and has spent about
six months of that time in the South
Pacific.
The 12th birthday of Miss Leah
Speaks was the inspiration for a par­
ty given at her home April 27. Mem­
bers of Girl Sciut Troop 4 and Mrs.
Pete Berg, Mrs. Frank Hackler and
Mrs. Speaks were present. Mrs. Hack­
ler baked the birthday cake.
Earl Watson left Monday for Pen­
dleton where he entrained with a
group of other Umatilla county men
for Portland where they will be in­
ducted into the U. S. Navy. Mr. Wat­
son has worked for O. O. Felthouse

miston have received word from their
son that he has recently been promot­
ed to First Lt. Robert Brace. The
latter is stationed with the Motor
Transport Group, at an air base near
Casper, Wyo. He has spent almost
two years in the service.
