Calling Attention To A Few Things Going On
While each of us is going about our daily duties,
and absorbed with our own affairs, we may fail to
take notice of the numerous things that are going on
that contribute to our general welfare and growth.
A new allotment has been granted for much need
ed school buildings. Funds for extension of our sew
er system have been approved, and the w ater system
is being gradually spread to new users. The work on
the drainage canal in town is progressing. The bond
ed indebtedness of the Westland Irrigation District
is being adjusted, much to the advantage of the farm
ers of that project. Water is now in the canals of all
the projects and crops are being seeded with no fear
of shortage of moisture for the coming season.
Very few of the houses in Victory Square are un
occupied and the demand for purchase or rent of
other houses continues strong. Many people are seek
ing better living quarters than were endured during
the boom days and are adding to their small houses,
or building new ones. Contemplated business build
ings on Main street are past the early stages and
await only priorities. Most of the new houses built
here have been sold and are occupied by owners w ho
are beautifying the grounds. Out at the Ordnance
Depot the demand for more workers is being slowly
but steadily supplied, and we may expect a full force
again before many weeks.
The new United States senator has been here to
view the Umatilla Rapids damsite and be educated
in the value and importance of its early construction.
Reports from the Hanford project are that it is being
enlarged and advancing speedily with 60,000 work
ers, and a billion dollars have been authorized for
war defense projects on the Pacific coast in prepara
tion for the war moving westward w’hen Germany
folds up. Big magazines are describing the possibi
lities of hydroelectric power for manufacturing in
the Columbia basin along the upper reaches of the
Columbia river.
Thus the picture enlarges at home and around us
nearby as the busy days go by, and it is well for our
local citizens to do more than mark time and only
wait for the bigger things that are certainly in the
lap of the future.
