Voters Must Register By Next Tuesday
Registration of voters for the primaries May 19th
will be closed April 18th—next Tuesday. Any voter
desiring to have a voice in the selection of candi
dates for the Fall election must get his name on the
poll books the next few days. The law does not pro
vide for swearing in on primary day. Only about
200 new voters have registered the last few weeks
and there are at least 1000 who should do so.
Several important contests in both parties are be
fore the people. Of particular interest are the cand
idates for two United States Senators. Do you Re
publicans want to vote for Charles A. Sprague or
Guy Cordon for the four year term and do you want
to vote for Rufus C. Holman or Wayne Morris for
the six year term? Do you Democrats want to vote
for Edgar W. Smith or Walter W. Whitbeck for the
six year term? Your Willis Mahoney has no oppo
sition for the four year term.
On the ballot in May will be other state and dis
trict and county candidates that may interest you.
It costs nothing to register and when election day
comes you will be able to exercise the greatest priv
ilege under the democracy for which we are fighting.
Some home owners are cleaning up their premises.
Around other homes are still old dry weeds, leaves
and trash. In no better way can good citizenship and
civic pride be shown than in the front and back
yard. Incidentally, a trim place shows more decent
respect and a better example for your next door
neighbor.
Wendell Willkie has withdrawn his name from
the Oregon primaries. On the primary ballot will
be 15 names for delegates, with seven to be elected,
to the Chicago Republican convention—and strange
to say, all are from the Portland area except one. He
is from Hermiston and he still stands for a liberal
Republican platform and is against the isolationists
—and the old guard politicians—who may have up
set their kettle of fish by stopping Willkie.
Year after year G. C. Humphreys (The Old Mae
stro) turns out fine bands at Hermiston high school.
This year’s group is certainly no exception. Two
excellent outside performances — at the U. O. D.
Monday and in Umatilla Thursday — is a fine rec
ord and the whole community is proud of their ac
complishment.
