A class of Echo high school boys
had a little practical experience in
surveying Tuesday when they laid out
a new block in Echo cemetery for the
city. The boys, under the supervision
of Mr. Cotton, surveyed the plat and
marked corners of the lots with steel

Miss Shirley Jarmon, former But­
ter Creek resident, and Henry Hanby
of Hermiston, who has been in the
Navy for two years, were married at
Montavilla last Tuesday. Miss Jar­
mon has been principal of the Gilbert
grade school near Portland for sever­
al years.
Lt. and Mrs. Vernon Smith arrived
Tuesday from Camp Hawze, near
Gainsville, Texas, to spend his fur­
lough with his parents. Mr. and Mrs.
Roy Smith. Vernon is a first lieuten-
ant in field artillery, having graduat­
ed from officers training school at Ft.
Sill, Okla., prior to his transfer to the
Texas camp. He enlisted in the coast
guard in 1940. The Smiths will be
here about ten days, his furlough ex­
piring April 4.
Mrs. D. Z. Penney, Mildred Penney
and Sue Graves returned Monday
from a week end visit with Louis Pen­
ney at the advanced naval training
station, Seattle. Louis has graduated
from the electricians training school
at the station and is soon to go to Cal­
ifornia to attend a motion picture pro­
jection school. He now has a rating
of fireman first class. They saw Wal­
ter Brommell at the camp. He is now
a seaman first class and expects to be
transferred to Pasco in a short time.
Echo.
Stanfield and
Umatilla
schools have combined in presenting
three 1-act plays at the city hall in
Echo March 29. Each school will put
on one play for this occasion and the
program will be repeated at Stanfield
March 30 and at Umatilla March 31.
Echo Methodist church is planning
a special Easter program at the
church Easter morning, to be follow­
ed by a pot-luck dinner at noon. This
Easter community dinner has been a
regular feature of the church for
many years.
Miss Bernice Mudge arrived Friday
for a day’s visit with her mothe r, Mrs.
Antone Cunha. Bernice is a Wave,
now employed in the Seattle navy post
office. She likes the service very,
much, she reports.
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Spinning have a
letter from Rose Liebbrand, former
Echo school teacher, who is now sta­
tioned at a WAC camp in Indiana.
She is now a lieutenant in that orga­
nization and expects promotion to the
rank of captain in a short time.
Mrs. Cy Oleman (Dorothy Mudge)
and her daughter. Toni Kay. and Mrs.
Mulcaacy of Tacoma, a niece of Mrs.
Cunha, are visiting at the Tony Cun­
ha ranch this week. Mr. Oleman ar­
rived from Tacoma Tuesday nicht and
will return home with his family Sun­

Lt Donald Lane, who just graduat­
ed from Stockton Aviation school, is
here visiting with his father and fam­
ily for 16 days. His father. Herbert
Lane Sr., who went to Stockton for
his son’s graduation and had the hon­
or of pinning on his wings, came home
with him.

Presnell. Mrs. Glenn Ostrom and son
Vane spent Thursday in Pendleton.
A daughter, Meriam Ann, was born
to Mrs. Robert McKenzie at the Ord­
