Mrs. Merle Eldrige of Hermiston
spent New Year’s day with her par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter N. Jackson
of Estacada.
Mrs. Paul Van Patten, who has been
confined to her home since Sunday
due to illness, is improving.
Sgt. W. T. Carpenter arrived Mon
day morning to visit his wife and
children who are with her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Cooney.
Mrs. Thomas E. Cooney left Wed
nesday afternoon for Salt Lake City
to join her husband, Lt. Thomas E.
Cooney, who is at present stationed
there.
Mrs. A. R. Boulware left Thursday
(today) for Forrest Grove where she
was called due to the death of her
sister. Mrs. Boulware had spent a
week in Forest Grove and had just
returned when it was thought that her
sister was some better, when she re
ceived word that her sister had passed
away.
The women of the Hermiston Bap
tist church honored Mrs. Blaine No
ble Tuesday evening at the home of
Mrs- T. J. Means. Games and music
were enjoyed, following which re
freshments were served from a lace-
covered table, pretty with flowers and
candy, Mrs. H. V. McGee and Mrs.
Waldo Dyer poured during the re
freshment hour. Mrs. D. D. Follett
and Mrs. E. G. Tilden were co-hos-
tesses with Mrs. Means. The honored
guest received many lovely gifts.

Sgt. Lawrence Shaughnessy from
Camp White at Medford spent the
holidays visiting his mother, Mrs. Ed-
na Shaughnessy. He returned to
Camp White Monday.
The Senior Service Girl Scouts en-
joyed a party Monday night at the
U.S.O. The same group plans to
take up the study of First Aid soon

with T. J. Means as instructor.
Shirley Joanne Quiring, who has
been confined to her home since Sat-
urday due to illness, is much im-
proved and able to be up again.
Miss Mary Lou Johnson, who spent
several days in St. Anthony’s Hospi
tal in Pendleton, was brought to the
home of Mrs. Jess Myrick in Pendle
ton Friday where she is recuperating
from the flu.
C. A. Doane, representative of the
Hod Carriers union of the Pendleton
office, was in Hermiston Wednesday
attending to business matters. Cecil
Chaney, who has been the Hermiston
agent, is now in the armed forces so
Mr. Doane will make periodic trips
here.
John Thaddius Jacson, S2/c, spent
the holidays with his parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Walter N. Jackson of Estacada.
John has recently finished his five
months course at Lexington, Mass.,
and is now stationed at the Puget
Sound navy yard as a Machine Gun
Instructor.
Last Friday evening 24 friends and
relatives of Claire Lindner gathered
at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. F.
Lindner for a surprise and farewell
party for Claire. He left Wednesday
to serve in the U. S. army. A very
enjoyable time was had by all pres
ent, everyone taking part in a mis
cellaneous program. Claire was pre
sented a Testament as a farewell gift.
Refreshments of ice cream, cake and
coffee were served.

Mrs. Ina Whitney has returned
from Petaluma, Calif., where she vis
ited her daughter and family, Mrs.
Barbara Rutherford.
The W. C. C. S. met at the home of
Mrs. O. C. Pierce Wednesday. As
sisting Mrs. Pierce were Mrs. Harry
Andrews, Mrs. M. Cassiday and Mrs.
Al Quiring. A luncheon was served
at noon to 27 members present. The
business meeting followed the lunch
eon with Mrs. A. E. Marble in charge.
Thomas White left Tuesday follow
ing a week’s visit here with his fam
ily and his brother, Roy White. Thom
as White is employed in the naval
yards at San Pedro-Wilmington, Cal.
He stated that he liked this country
and would like to move here but did
not wish to leave his war work in
California.
Miss Patty Emert, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. W. A. Emert, is a recent
graduate of Kinman Business univer
sity of Spokane, receiving a Bachelor
Degree of Secretarial Science. She
was a member of Alpha Chi Sorority
and a member of K.B.U- Key club. At
present she is employed as secretary
at the L. A. Moore furniture store
here.
Mr. and Mrs. L. Hammer have just
received an airmail letter from their
daughter, Miss B. Louise Hammer,
stating she has arrived in Honolulu,
and will take up her work at the
Kauekeolani Children’s Hospital as
surgery nurse on January 10th. She
states she is enjoying the sunshine
and old friends after a rather stormy
voyage.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Christian and
family left Saturday for Vancouver
after a few days visit here with
friends and relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. George Scarlett are
the parents of the first baby born in
the Hermiston General hospital in the
new year. He was born Saturday,
January 8, and weighed nine pounds.
He has been named George William.
D. F. Belding has been named local
manager for the Portland-Pendleton
Motor Transport. Mr. Belding comes
from Portland and will move his fam
ily of a wife and two children to Her
miston as soon as he can find suitable
living quarters.

was beautifully decorated with roses
and carnations, pink and white being
the color scheme. The bridal party
stood under an arch made of roses
during the candlelight service.
Miss Elamae Casper, sister of the
bride, was maid of honor and Steven
Demianew, brother of the groom, was
best man. Little Jimmie Casper,
nephew of the bride, carried the ring
in a rose. Mrs. P. A. Marble, sister
of the bride, sang “My Darling”, ac
companied by her mother, and Miss
Rebecca Pierson played the wedding
march.
The bride wore a rose crepe dress
with black accessories and the maid
of honor wore green crepe.
About 30 friends and relatives at
tended the ceremony with the follow
ing out-of-town guests present: Stev
en Demianew of Seattle, Miss Allen
Wookey of Sidney, Nebr., and Mrs. P.

followed the ceremony.
Pfc. Demianew is stationed at Wal
la Walla for the present, following ac
tion overseas. Future plans for the
couple are rather indefinite for the
present.
New Mangle Is Installed
Interested by-standers in front of
the Hermiston Laundry and Dry
Cleaners early this week will be in
terested to learn that the gigantic
mangle weighed approximately eight
tons. Horace Smith, owner of the
laundry, this week installed the man
gle because of the increased capacity
of his concern. The task of moving
the huge machine from a truck to the
interior of the laundry was quite a
job.
