main canals of the Hermiston Irriga
tion District on October 3, so that the
canals may be dried up preparatory
to annual cleaning and repairs.
All head gates should be closed so
that the drain water can be carried
away to spillways. The water table
in much of the area is high and needs
draining out, and the drain ditches
need to be dried up as much as possi
ble to prepare and conserve the area
soils during the winter months for
