Rev. J. W. Stuart left for Spokane
Tuesday night by train to attend a
business meeting of the council of the
church, He expects to return Thurs-
day.

Miss Mary Lou Johnson, Mrs. Jean
Wilson and “Jinky” spent from Thurs-
day till Sunday vacationing at Bing-
ham Springs.
Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Backus, who
purchased the home where Mr. and
Mrs. L. M. White resided, have moved
into their home this week.
Mrs. Harold DeMott, aunt of Miss
Audrey Null, accompanied Miss Null
and Miss Frances Follett to Pendleton
Wednesday.
Miss Thelma Swarner and Miss Es
ther Linder of Portland arrived
Thursday morning to visit at the home
of the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs.
A. C. Swarner.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Henry and
small son arrived home Tuesday from
Sherwood. Ore., where they had been
a week. They were called there due
to the illness of Mrs. Henry’s mother.
W. M. Pierson and family of La-
Grande came Sunday to visit with
relatives in Hermiston. Mrs. G. M.
Pierson, mother of Mr. Pierson, re
turned to LaGrande with them where
she will visit a week.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rauch recently
returned from a week’s vacation trip
to Spokane and Chewelah, Wash.,
where they visited relatives and en
joyed a vacation. Mr. Rauch left last
week end for the armed forces with
the U. S. Army Engineers.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom O’Grady have
moved into the former Bill Shaar
home, now owned by A. W. Behrman.
Mr. and Mrs. O’Grady formerly op
erated Stewart’s Cabins but disposed
of the property some months ago to
Harry Connor. Mr. Behrman will al
so reside at his place, which is locat
ed south of town.

Mrs. Byron Brown and two children
of Portland spent the week end here
at the home of her parents, Mr. and |
Mrs. Bill Bailey. Also a houseguest at
the Bailey home was a grandson, Jim
my Bailey of La Grande.
Mrs" J. W. Stuart returned Friday
from Baker where she went to visit
her son and family, Mr. and Mrs. Gor-
don Stuart. She brought her three
grandchildren back with her for a ten
day vacation.
F. C. Thomas of Portland and
George Carl of Oswego were week end
guests at the Dr. F. B. Belt home.
Both the former two were delegates
to the Legion convention held in Bak
er.
Herbert E. Stombaugh, son of Her- |
bert Stombaugh of Hermiston, has
begun training at Farragut, Idaho,
for the U. S. Navy. At the conclus
ion of recruit training, he will be
given an opportunity for advanced
study in one of the many Navy ser
vice schools.
Mrs. Margaret Fraser and Miss
Clara Bryant returned last Friday
from a six week’s trip which took
them to Santa Ana, Santa Barbara, |
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and oth
er points. At Santa Ana they visit
ed Aviation Cadet Tom Fraser and at
Santa Barbara with other relatives.
They were gone about six weeks.
Miss Mary Petri, who has taught
school in Hermiston for the past 18
years, will teach at the Gregory
Heights grade school in Portland, be
ginning her new assignment Septem
ber 7. Miss Petri spent from Friday |
until Monday in Hermiston visiting |
