We Will Save Rome
The Eternal City, which we have respected for
centuries for its history, law, architecture, and art, is
now humiliated by the acts of a new Nero. The his
torical Nero smiled while Rome burned, but the mod
ern Nero must rave and weep because of approach
ing conquerors. The old Nero did not give warning,
nor scatter leaflets to the population, nor respect
churches, and ancient citadels of the once great civi
lization. Nor does the new Nero respect laws laid
down by ancient Rome, and their contribution to mo
dern democracy. By his acts as dictator and tyrant,
he would destroy the foundations of the city he seeks
to defend.
When we bomb Rome and enter its gates it is not
to destroy Rome but to save it and its historical
greatness from its enemies within its gates. We en
ter under the Magna Charter and the Declaration of
Independence, which were founded on the laws of
the ancient Romans. We did not bomb Rome like
Hitler bombed London and Coventry, which is the
way of another tyrant. We have not sneaked up on
any Pearl Harbor which is the way of another tyrant.
We will be forced to subdue these enemies of law and
civilization, but to restore better government even to
their own lands, and to restore the order of a peace
ful and advanced civilization.
The cost to the modern world is very great to re
store order to all the world. That is the job for us
and our allies. To do this we must suffer denials,
pay taxes, and buy bonds. We cannot stop doing
these things until the war is over, nor until the peace
treaties are completed, and the plans for the preven
tion of another war are made. Bçcause we are at
present victorious on all our fronts does not mean
complacency on our part.

HEN a street or a road is crowded, you can
see it. Hut you can't see when the Long Distance
lines are crowded.
So the operator will tell you when the circuit
you want is extra busy. Then she will ask you
to limit your Long Distance call to not more
than 5 minutes.
That will help others to get their calls
through, too.
Of course, there won't be congestion every
time you call, but when there is we know you'll
be glad to co-operate.
Thanks for all your help so far. War needs
the wires more and more every day.
