We see pictures of fox holes covered with a piece of canvas and we feel neglected because the government does not provide better housing. The marines fight in the tangled underbrush of the jungles in the rain on scant handouts for several days — our good will is overtaxed by the rationing boards at home. Every hour our fliers are scouting the seas in the face of danger and death and we quibble over long hours of work and “time and a half”. Our boys on all fronts are expeected to work long hours, sunshine, rain or cold, and scores of our work ers aly off on bad days and do WPA work on good ers lay off on bad days and do WPA work on good days. On the African front our boys are fighting fiercely, and ambulances and trains are carrying back the wounded to field hospitals. Those who gave their last measure of devotion to our freedom are buried in African sands with a small white cross to mark their resting places. And yet, we at home, scarcely know through self denial, burdens of war and discomforts of life, that we are in a great war. On the Russian front thou sands of men are dying for this same freedom we are fighting for on other fronts. We praise Russia for all this and pass that nation some tanks, guns, planes and ammunition. All of which is more ser ious business than we are giving to the job we have to do. It will also prove more serious when the war is over and the boys come home. We, who have fared well and laid by bonds and other resources that will tide us over the difficult period to follow, will have to answer well to the boys who have sacrificed in many ways and do not find fat jobs awaiting them wh*en mustered out.
