We went through the Patent office
which was moved some time ago from
Washington. D. C., to Richmond. The
State Capitol building is a beautiful
building and set in a large park and
contains many art treasures. When
in this building we stood on the exact
spot where Gen. Lee stood when he ac
cepted the Commander-inChief office
of the Confederate army. The Con
federate museums were also points of
| interest to us as was also the home of
Jefferson Davis while he was presi-
| dent of the Confederacy.
In all the east the over-all impres
sion is war. Soldiers and sailors are
everywhere- throngs of them. Every
train is loaded with them on the move.
Provisions are becoming more and
more scarce every day. Fresh beef
is seldom on the market in many cit
ies. Bacon and coffee are very hard
to get. In order to get pineapple
juice in one locality you must have a
doctor’s order.

On our trip home we left Richmond
Sunday evening at 5:30 over the C.
O. O. railroad through Cincinnatti
and Indianapolis to Chicago. Then
over the Union Pacific to Hermiston,
arriving here at 2:30 Thursday morn-
ing.
During all our trip we found no
place like home and we are glad to
get back to Hermiston.
