Echo school starts the third week
of this term with a total registration
of 179, an increase of 20 over the
opening day registration. The posi
tion of seventh and eighth grade
teacher is still being filled by a sub
stitute, although Mrs. Reese of Athe
na has been regularly employed and
is expected to take the position the
first of next week. Five teachers
have already been elected to this po
sition, all of whom have entered the
army or given up their contracts for
various other reasons.
Under the present setup, M. E.
Larive, superintendent, is the only
man on the faculty as compared with
three men last year. All of the wom
en teachers are married women.
Transportation of pupils has been
a problem this year, as the east side
bus driver, Jack Teel, has entered the
army, and the number of pupils on
the Nolin route has increased so that
the regular bus cannot carry all of
them. Pupils east of Echo have been
brought in by the parents the past
two weeks but Kenneth Coppinger, a
high school senior, is now operating
a small bus and doubling back over
part of the route each trip.
The Nolin bus, which normally car
ries 16 pupils, is also doubling back
to the Lisle farm to accommodate the
29 children on that route. Most of
the increase on the Nolin route is
due to defense workers at the ord
nance depot moving into farm houses
along the Umatilla river south of Ec
ho.
