sponge cake
Chill milk until icy cold. Drain peaches
and save juice. There should be 12
cup juice. If not, add water. Heat
slowly to boiling a mixture of peach
juice, water and salt. Add gelatin and
stir until dissolved. Chill until mix­
ture begins to thicken. Meanwhile,
dice 34 cup peaches. Combine with
quartered cherries and diced cake.
Then fold into chilled gelatin mix
ture. Whip chilled milk with rotary
egg beater, or electric beater at high
speed, until stiff. Fold into chilled
gelatin mixture. Line an oiled mold
holding about 6 cups with remaining
34 cup sliced peaches and the strips
of cake. Fill with gelatin mixture.
Chill until firm. Serves 6.
*1}2 cups sliced, fresh peaches may
be used if 12 cup water is substituted
for the peach juice.

CUT OYSTERS
Mrs. Julius Haney and daughter,
Mrs. George Barger of St. Helens, ar­
rived Monday for a week’s visit at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. U. G. Ship-
ley. parents of Mrs. Haney. Last
week Mr. Shipley, though quite ill,
enjoyed a visit with his brother, C.
A. Shipley and son Carl and his wife,
also from Banks.
Sam Meade and Jess Meade made
a week end trip to Seattle. Sam’s
wife returned here with them.
Mr. and Mrs. Denzil Arnold and
children and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence
Arnold were Yakima visitors Sun-
day. The latter remained there for
work.
Rev. J. M. Cornelison of Pendleton
visited the Presbyterian church and
Sunday school July 12 not knowing
that Rev. Mitchell was vacationing
and acted as supply teacher and also
preached.

Misses Virginia and Lorna Gabriel
are enjoying a five-day vacation in
Portland as the guests of their sis­
ter. Mrs. Willard Conley.
Mrs. Orlow Warren, Joann and
Normie returned Saturday from a
two months visit with relatives in
Iowa and Sioux City.
Mrs. C. C. Rhea took her mother
and father, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Stur­
divant. to Parkdale Sunday for a
visit with her children there. Miss
Mary Rhea is substituting on the
rural route for Mrs. C. C. Rhea for
a few days.
Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Smith of San
Diego and former Stanfield druggist
for many years called on friends here
Saturday.
Miss Dorothea Shelton, who has
been employed at the National bank
in San Jose, arrived home Sunday
j for a two weeks vacation at the home
of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred
Shelton.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Richards of
Pendleton visited at the Marion Mar-
ton home Monday.
G. L. Dunning made his regular
trip to Pendleton Monday as a mem­
ber of the selective draft board. Boys
reported called here are Dean Cleg­
horn. Ray Hogue. Chester Foss and
I Sam Meade. Walter Lewis is leav-
| ing this week to enlist.
Jerry Krause and five other little
I boys celebrated his fifth birthday
| Saturday at the home of Mrs. Jess
I Meade.
The Girls Recreation club complet-
ed their handicraft articles Tuesday
afternoon at their club rooms under
the direction of Mrs. Jean Wilson of
the U.S O. at Hermiston. Their lead­
er, Mrs. John Kruse, has returned
from a week’s outing at Tollgate and
will be present for a business meet-
ing.

Mr. and Mrs. 1). W. Bliss and Fred
Bliss have returned from Missoula.
Mont. Fred states he must have-rid­
den horseback for 500 miles.
Second baked food sale sponsored
by the Ladies Aid will be held at
Refvem’s store July 18.
Miss Beryl Dewing and Miss Mild­
red Mollsted are visiting Beryl’s aunt,
Margaret McDonald, this week near
the diversion dam.
Rev. B. F. Mitchell will preach
July 19 at 11 a. m. on “What Can We
Do?”
