CLEAN UP YOUR OWN PLACE!
The Springtime cleanup is strongly urged. The
city has set a day, and the entire town needs raking
over and the debris of months cleared away. This
means from Main street to the outlying edges. The
work does not mean that citizens leave the job to the
city authorities, or their neighbors, but that each one
does his own job.
A home is often judged by the front yard, and al
so the back alley. If the outside premises are untidy
it is safe to predict that there is dust under the dav
enport or cobwebs in the corners inside the house.
Because the owners come out the front door spick
and span in the Sunday best, does not mean that
good sanitary conditions exist within their four
walls. A camp cabin may be more clean and san
itary than an established home, and nothing may
be more indicative, of our personal habits than well
kept grounds.
The same observations may apply to a city. Dirty
streets and alleys suggest to newcomers and strang
ers that the pride of the governing body and of the
citizens is below par. Habit may not only be a
splendid virtue, but a vicious thing. A community
may become lazy just the same as an individual.
Pride in our town and in our home premises create
higher public morale. And a good public morale
leads to greater interest in our economic and public
welfare. It takes these to build a city, and we are
up to that point today more than ever before.
Hermiston is particularly fortunate in many new
circumstances, and there are greater things ahead.
We have many citizens ami spirited organizations
which need the response of every individual home
owner and resident in their efforts to put across a
better town, and a better and more healthful place
to live.
This is said l ight at every person who may read
this, and with the purpose that you, and you, say it
to others, and all together renew our pride in our
growing city, and not only make cleanup day a suc
cess, but keep clean, and keep the town clean and
attractive to the eye and mind of ourselves, and our
new people and visitors.

have joined the troop: Diane Smith,
Marjorie Jean Doyle, Marilyn Mil
ler, Janice Daugherty, Patsy Berg
and Corlena Pedigo. These scouts
are passing their tenderfoot tests and
will soon begin working for second
class ratings.
Donna Mohr and Glena Davis, who
were members of scout troops before
coming to Hermiston, have joined as
A Second Class scouts. There are
now 17 girls in this troop.
The girls enjoyed a bike hike Sat-!
urday, April 5. They were accom
panied by their leader, Miss Helen
Thomas. After biking to their des
tination two and one-half miles north |
of town, they prepared their meal,
sang songs, hunted wild flowers and
played games.
A business meeting is held the first
Thursday of each month. During |
the following meetings the girls work
on projects to earn badges and
awards. Once a month a cook-out or
hike is scheduled.
The members of the Troop Com
mittee which serves as an advisory |
group for the Intermediate Scouts
are: Mrs. Russell Piersol, Mrs. Enid
Delaney, Mrs. Leighton Smit and
Mrs. Beryl Doyle.
