PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION
UMATILLA RAPIDS LOOMS AGAIN!
Sidney Hillman, one of the heads of the OPM,
stated in an interview last Sunday that the Umatilla
Rapids should be next. This makes a cordial agree
ment from us about the dam site, through Dr. Paul
J. Raver, administrator of Bonneville and Grand
Coulee, through the army engineers, all members of
Congress from the Northwest, the National house
committee on rivers and harbors, to and including
the heads of National Defense. We have always been
assured that the President was in like accord, and
now, with the Pacific growing in importance in com
mercial and naval defense, and the Pacific North
west likewise increasing its facilities to aid that de
fense, there seems but little else to do but for some
one in high authority to press the button.
DEPOT WORKERS GOOD CITIZENS
We have grown accustomed to the many workers
on the Umatilla Ordnance Depot, and somewhat ac
quainted with many of them. Now that they are go
ing, score by score, we are beginning to miss famil
iar faces. We can say, without contradiction, that
the community has gotten on well with them, and we
hope that they feel that way about our months of
association. In daily parlance, they have all behav
ed extremely well, so well that we must say that they
are a fine bunch, and we therefore extend them a
warm welcome when they return to other works
here. From our experience we can do better also, and
hope to have better provisions for their welfare.
NAVY OFFERS OPPORTUNITY
A two ocean navy and almost 1000 battleships,
cruisers, and other war craft for permanent defense,
as well as the present national emergency is calling
for young men. Unusual offers with opportunities
for the future are offered. Men who face the call of
the draft, or seeking training in the various courses
offered will do well to consider this phase of service
to their country. Articles descriptive of opportuni
ties appear in this issue of the Herald and in many
other newspapers and we recommend consideration
of this important subject.
