LAMB FEEDING TO
BE SPONSORED BY
E O WHEAT LEAGUE
A lamb feeding contest with wheat
announced for eastern Oregon 4-H
members by the Eastern Oregon
i Wheat League in cooperation with
the Oregon State extension service. |
The feeding period will begin about
September 1 and will containue 90
days, ending at the time of the an
nual convention of the league at Hep
pner.
While feeding wheat to livestock
is not likely to be as profitable as
formerly under the increased price of |
wheat, the contest will be carried
through as a means of acquainting
more peopl in each country with the
ities and methods of feeding
in preparation for a possible
rice period following the pre-
fense emergency, says Charles
ith, state county agent leader
W.
and secretary of the wheat league.
Each contestant will be sold 12
white-faced lambs this summer,
will have been graded in ad-
vanee so that each boy or girl will
. ns nearly as can be deter-
mined. the same quality of lamb as
lets. After the feeding period,
each contestant must exhibit 10
lambs at the state convention. Ex
pert graders will be on hand to
rate each lamb as to market value
after which each contestant will re
ceive a bonus of 50 cents per head
for each lamb grading top market
quality.
The feeding project is being hand
led by a general committee consist
ing of the county agents and a wheat-
livestock grower in each of the chief
wheat counties; H. A. Lindgren, ex
tension livestock specialist: D. E.
Richards, superintendent of the east
ern Oregon branch experiment sta
tion L. J. Allen, assistant state club
Smith.
The only requirement as to feed
used is that : wheat be the only grain
fed. The contestant may use any
roughage he desires, or even add
other concentrates, although accur
ate cost records must be kept and ;
reported.
