“Lest We Forget”
Next week we will celebrate another Fourth of
July. With Stanfield as a center, the west end of
Umatilla county will have the usual festivities with
music, dancing, sports and patriotic oratory. In the
customary American way we will observe a great
event in our history. With events shaping a new
destiny of mankind, we wonder, in this yet an hour
of peace at home, how we may conduct such ceremo
nies a year from now.
With the flag of freedom still floating from our
mountain heights, we are called upon to still defend
our standards of democracy, and uphold the princi
ples of liberty and justice for all mankind. We hope
that when the tumult and the shouting dies and, with
Kipling, when “The captains and the kings depart”,
there will still stand “Thine ancient and a contrite
heart”.
“Lord of hosts be with us yet,
Lest we forget,—lest we forget”.
More And More Housing
The housing situation is growing more acute every
day. In spite of the fact that something like 50 hous
ing units are being built, or assured in Hermiston,
trailer houses are rolling in and tent houses are ris
ing, there yet remains a great need apparent in the
very near future. So far no one has been required
to sleep lindera sagebrush, though many have curled
