J. K. Smawley of Colfax, Wash.,
has leased a portion of the Rohrman
building opposite the Rohrman Mo­
tor Co. and is remodelling the rooms
into a restaurant and lunch counter.
No date has been set for the open­
ing although it will probably be next
week end.
Mr. Smawley is installing a horse­
shoe counter an'd will feature lunch­
es and dinners.
VETERANS PICNIC
SCEDULED SUNDAY
A Veterans’ picnic will be held on
Sunday, June 15, at Battle Mt. park
under the sponsorship of the Pendle-
i ton American Legion post. A bas­
ket lunch will be served at noon with
, free ice cream for the kiddies.
Games, races and other sports will
] be enjoyed during the day. All vet-
| erans are invited without charge, but
should bring own basket lunches.

Examiners Coming June l$th
Examiners for drivers and chauf­
feurs licenses will be in Hermiston.
Umatilla and the Umatilla Ordnance
Depot, Thursday, June 19th, from
10 to 4. All 1939 licenses expire
June 30th and should be renewed by
that date. Those over seventy are
required to take the examination, as
e persons who have never been li-
( used in this state.
7'n Attend R.E.A. Convention
R. L. Woolley, manager, and Miss
•Jane Jackson, bookkeeper, of the
Umatilla Electric Cooperative, will
tt> nd a meeting of R.E.A. managers
and personnel to be held in Eugene
Friday. Mr. Woolley will be accom­
panied by Mrs. Woolley while Miss
Jackson will accompany Mr. and
Mrs. W. O. Kersbergen who are go­
ing as far as Portland to attend the
Rose Festival.

4-H CLUBBERS TO
HELP INCREASE
MEAT OUTPUT
Oregon’s 4-H club members will
join 250,000 other 4-H’ers through­
out the nation in responding to the
call for greater production of meat
this year to supply home and nat­
ional defense requirements, says H.
C. Seymour, state club leader. Many
club members are enrolling in the
1941 livestock projects, where they
will produce all kinds of meat ani­
mals.
All those enrolled in such clubs
are eligible to share in the benefits
of the national 4-H meat animal
competition. Last year the nation’s
four sectional winners, which includ­
ed Robert Zielinski, Salem, reported
gross returns on their enterprises,
totaling $24,618 and cash prizes on
exhibits totaling $3,247. The com­
petition will sta rt in the counties un­
der the direction of county agents or
county club agents.

Examiner Here June 19
The traveling examiner of opera­
tors and chauffeurs is scheduled to
arrive in Hermiston Thursday, June
19, and will be on duty a t the city
ibiary between the hours of 10 a.m.
o 5 p.m., according to a recent an­
nouncement released from the Secre-
ary of State’s office. All those
wishing permits or licenses to drive
cars are asked to get in touch with
the examiner during these hours.

Sammy McCracken, up and com­
ing fighter from Hermiston, will step
into a little faster company at Boise
Friday night when he meets Everett
Reagen in the semi-final event. Mc­
Cracken has been training regularly
of late and is in fine fettle for the
match. The main event of the card
at Boise will feature R. J. Lewis, ne­
gro, and Burke, well known middle­
weight.
McCracken will fight ' in Pendler
ton soon under the sponsorship of the
V. F. W. He has also been signed
to fight the main event on the Stan­
field Fourth of July card.
Ben
O’Conner, manager, will accompany
McCracken to Boise Friday.
