Beneath the shade of a spreading Locust tree is a
much sought spot these days in Hermiston and
roundabout. Little did we think when we planted
these hardy desert trees that we were giving hostag
es to fortune in a great defense program.
Their trunks grew and branches spread against
the assaults of wind and storm, and they provided
shade and comfort for men and animals that found
habitation here. Highways and avenues and fields
were cooled from scorching heat, and the ravages of
the southwester. It is fair to say that the thousands
of trees for miles around transformed the early des
ert atmosphere from early harshness to a softer and
more livable mildness.
Too little appreciation has been given for the
presence of these groves, and lawn covered, lane
lined and field edged shelters. A million trees have
grown up and upwards since we began planting, and
we have almost forgotten the lack of them.
Now come our new neighbors by orders from out-
government, and give a new meaning to the acts of
former days. And you, the owners of trees, should
have a new appreciation of what has been done for
you, and help spread the benefits to the camping
strangers within our gates. It is just one way, of the
many, we can help defend our nation.
