A nation-wide drive to produce
every egg possible from laying flocks
this spring has just been announced
at Washington, D. C. as a part of
the program to increase the produc
tion of certain concentrated foods
while holding down the output of j
staple export crops such as wheat, [
cotton and tobacco.
The program fits in well with the '
suggestions made throughout Oregon
this spring by poultry specialists at
Oregon State college, who recom- !
mended that egg producers hold their
flocks to the maximum of present i
housing facilities, and that ample
feed be used to insure maximum pro
duction. Neither the national nor
state situation, however, w arrants
expansion in permanent new housing, I
according to Secretary of Agriculture
Claud Wickard and the Oregon poul
try specialists.
Eggs have been included among a
few foods such as dairy products, |
pork, and chickens for meat, the pro
duction of which is to be encouraged
for the next two years. These foods j
will be needed in increased amounts
in this country as industrial payrolls
are stepped up, and they are the
easiest foods to export under the
present program of American aid to
nations resisting aggression.
While corn is the feed expected to
be used in greatest volume in carry
ing out this program, wheat will re
ceive the benefit throughout the wes
tern states particularly. Research
carried on at Oregon State college in
the last few years has shown that j
wheat is a suitable and even super- j
ior feed grain for all types of live- '
stock. It already forms the chief in- (
gredient of Oregon poultry feeds and
the proportion of wheat can be in- 1
creased whenever it is cheaper than I
other grains, according to tests made

market on the types of food mention
ed in order to maintain prices profit
able to the producers. Average lev
els aimed at are eggs, 2 2c; pork, s<l
per hundredweight: chickens. 15c
per pound, and dairy products, basis i
of 31c per pound of butter—all pri
ces figured at Chicago.
