Mrs. H. G. McCulley.
THREE INCHES
The first real snowfall of the
year was experienced the first of the
week when approximately three inch
es of snow was lecorded here. This
was about on par with other sections
of the country except in the foothills
south of Hermiston. The snow was
quite wet, however, and sleighing for
youngsters did not last long.
The following is the weather re-
irt according to Charles Taylor.

MEN TO BE GUESTS
WESTLAND GRANGE
Ladies of the Westland Grange will
entertain the men at a dinner at the
Frank Seeliger home Thursday, Ja n
uary 16, it was announced at the last
•egular meeting of the Grange. It
was also anounced that at the next
regular meeting members of the Soil
Conservation camp at Stanfield would
be present to explain their work.
There was but little business to be
transacted at the last meeting, and
nembers spent part of the time prac
ticing a seating drill. The Lecturer’s
program consisted of questions and
answers, by the lecturer, Margaret
Seeliger, and a report by the Agri
cultural Committee chairman, Don
Sherwood, on the conference of
Grange
Agricultural
Committees
held at Baker on the 9th.
Following the meeting refresh-
e its were served by Mr. and Mrs.
Guy Shaw.
TEST GRASS PLOTS
FACE BOMBING
Army pilots who practice on the
newly laid out bombing field in
northern Morrow county may have
some practice in seeing what they
ran miss as well as what they can hit.
Several experimental grass plots were
established several years ago through
cooperation of County Agent C. D.
Conrad, and the Soil Conservation
service. A fter a conference with war
department officials, those in charge
have decided to leave the plots be in
the hope that they may be missed by
the bombers.
Valuable information from these
experiments may be expected in the
next few years, says Conrad.

lieve th at God is working in this
movement to help the people of this
community to live for God. Continu

blessings of fellowship with God in
his temple of worship.

school meets at 10 with classes for

Completing the message begun last
Sunday morning on “ How to Become
a Christian” we shall give a Biblical
answer to the question “Is Baptism
Necessary for Salvation?”
Doris Follett will lead the young
people’s discussion at 7:00 o’clock.
At 8 o’clock the pastor will bring a
message on the subject, “The U npar
donable Sin”.
SE V E N T H D A Y A D V E N T IST
The theory of organic evolution is
more widely believed than any other
doctrine concerning the human race.
There must be a reason. Yet modern
science in endeavoring to support
this ‘phantom pet’ has discovered evi
dence hard to explain. Recent find
ings in geology and genetics give a
new foothold to an old Bible truth.
“ Evolution or Creation — What
Shall We Believe?” is the subject of
this week's lecture at the Seventh
Day Adventist church. Mrs. Alton
Kingsbury will be the vocal soloist of
the evening. There will be instru
mental music from Walla Walla col
lege. A lively song service starts at
7:45.
CHRISTIAN SC!SHGE CHURCHES
iiQACRAMENT ’ was the subject of
0 the Lesson - Sermon In all
Churches of Christ, Scientist, on
Sunday, January 12.
The Golden Text was, “The grace
of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the
love of God, and the communion
of the Holy Ghost, be with you
all” (II Cor. 13:14).
Among the citations which com
prised the Lesson-Seimon were the
following from the Bible: "Now we
exhort you, brethren, warn them
that are unruly, comfort the feeble
minded, support the weak, be pa
tient toward all men. See that none
render evil for evil unto any man;
but ever follow that w'hich is good,
both among yourselves, and to all
men. Rejoice evermore. Pray with
out ceasing. In everything give
thanks: for this is the will of God
in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Quence not the Spirit” d Thess.
5:14-19).
The Lesson-Sermon also included
the following correlative passages
from the Christian Science textbook,
“Science and Health with Key to
the Scriptures" by Mary Baker
Eddy: "Are all who eat bread and
drink wine in memory of Jesus
willing truly to drink his cup. take
his cross, and leave all for the
Christ-principle? Then why ascribe
this inspiration to a dead rite, in
stead of showing, by casting out er
ror and making the body ’holy,
acceptable unto God.' that Truth
ha* tome to the understanding?'*
The U. S. Marine Corps will pro
bably be authorized very shortly to
recruit a larger number of men than
it was allowaed to enlist all during
1940, it was revealed by Major James
B. Hardie, recruiting officer in
charge of this district.
The names of a considerable num
ber of applicants who have already
been accepted have been placed on a
waiting list, pending such time as
they can actually be enlisted.
The quota for February will most
likely exceed that for this month, the
major believes. Probably by March
the Marine Corps will be allowed to
expand to such a degree that new
recruiting stations will have to be
established in this district to take
care of enlistments. Recommenda
tions for the opening up of new sta
