T he im p o rtan ce of b reed in g w ith
a p u reb red sire can no t be o ver-em
phasized. T h e h erd sire is w ith o u t
d o u b t th e m ost im p o rta n t a n im a l on
a farm w h ere th e b reed er ex p ects to
p ro fit m ain ly by th e m ilk a n d b u tte r
fat p ro d u ctio n . The av e ra g e cow
can tra n s m it q u a litie s o f m ilk and
b u tte rfa t p ro d u ctio n to only a very
lim ited n u m b er of d a u g h te rs w h ile
th e sire tra n s m its to m an y d a u g h
ters.
T h e p resen t day b reed ers a re m ore
concerned w ith th e im p ro v em en t of

im p ro p er h a n d lin g of sires, I w ould
recom m end th a t th e sire be k ep t in
a lo t w ith a d eq u ate sa fe ty devices to
provide p ro tectio n fo r th e keeper
and give an o p p o rtu n ity fo r keeping
a: c u ra te b reed in g records.
By th e c o n tin u a l use of p u rebred
sires, th e sto ck w ill h av e in a few
g e n e ra tio n s th e ap p e a ra n c e and pro
d u cing a b ility of p u reb red s. A fter
th re e g e n e ra tio n s of u sin g p u re-b red
sires on scru b d am s th e o ffsp rin g
w ould have 87% per c e n t p u re blood
and a fte r six g e n e ra tio n s w ould be
98 p er c en t p u re blood. T h is is an
a rg u m e n t in itse lf for th e u sin g of
p u reb red sires.
