HAPPIEST
HOilOAy SEASON
by G. C. Humphreys
(From The Bulldog)
T he band is happy in the comple
tion of the football season, tu rn in g
w ith pleasure from foot-sore tru d g
ing and w ind-burned faces to the
more comfortable conditions indoors
at basketball games.
T h at speeding up th a t occurs at
the end of one of the m arches is a
little joke on the trom bone section,
who are compelled to sw ing wicked
slides to get over the notes. The
name of the march is “ E P luribus
Unum ," which Cecil Madden tra n s
lates as “A Pulverized Onion” !
Have you noticed those deep,
booming tones coming from Dale
Elwood’s tuba? It is surprising w hat
a little enthusiasm and practise will
do!
Since Kay Keener completed pre
lim inary training, the saxophone
section is a full q u artet. Donna Say
lor, Bill Nation and Bob Jackson are
the other altos, and w ith Audrey
Null, soprano, Neil Borthw ick, melo
dy, and Cecil Madden, baritone, the
saxophone section is well rounded
out, and effective.
The band contains two fam ily tr i
os. B arbara F ollett, on trom bone;
Doris Follett, on horn, have followed
big sister Frances, who is solo clari
net; Allan Clarke, who recently
shifted to baritone, is aided by sis
ter Maribelle, on clarinet, and E thel,
on horn.
At th e Christm as c a n ta ta F riday
n ig h t the band appeared in several
styles of uniform s, choir robes and
formals vying w ith the reg u lar blue
uniform , because a num ber of band
members also appeared as singers.
One of the busiest was Phyllis
Sires, who played accom panim ents
for the can tata, attired in a lovely
rose colored formal.
The cymbal doesn’t need to be
heard often, but is very effective in
the “ punches”. Eugene M iller is band
cym balist and does he bang those
things— when he catches th e cue!
To our customers and good friends we say “Merry
Christmas.” And may our friendships continue to
grow even stronger as the years go by.
S A Y L O R ’S
Merry Christm as to you— our friends, neighbors and patrons. We
gladly join w ith others whose privilege it has been to serve you,
in sending our h eartiest holiday greetings!
