CALLED BY DEATH
Mrs. A ntone Vey, 83, prom inent
pioneer of eastern Oregon, died in
Pendleton Sunday afternoon.
She was born in the Azore islands
an d came to the United States in the
ea rly years of her life. She was
m arried 4 7 years ago to A ntone Vey,
who died in Jan u ary , 1938.
A fter her m arriage she and Mr.
Vey settled a t B u tter Creek, 21 miles
so u th of Echo
where, through

th ey developed one of the most com
p lete and extensive livestock hold
ings in the state. They came to P en
dleton 36 years ago and had lived
continuously a t 2009 W est W ebb St.
Mrs. Vey was known as one of the
few women who knew the livestock
business and who had a complete
and thorough knowledge of th a t in
d u stry . She was also known for her
love for her many friends and her
interest in th e w elfare of young peo
ple. She was a devoted member of
th e Catholic church.
Surviving are a son, Antone Vey,
J r ., and two daughters, Miss Mamie
Vey and Miss Anna Vey.
The funeral was held W ednesday
from St. M ary’s church w ith the
Rev. J. L. McKenna, S. J., officiat
ing.
