Notice of Appreciation.
PRO O F o f
In such times as la st week you will always find th a t CONSUMER
COOPERATIVES are able to PROVE their worth in a dram atic
way. They fight to protect the custom ers' welfare w hile others
are tem pted to profiteer. COOPERATION PAYS in dollars & cents.
L ast week some retailers were asking as high as $8.10 per hund
red for Sugar, and your co-op. sold it for $6.50. Some were
asking 83c for 10 pounds of sugar while your co-op. store was sell
ing 10 pounds for 69c.
Do not be deceived. The consumers' most effective protection is in
th e cooperative movement.

GARDEN CLUB
CHATS
The first Fall Flow er Show of the
H erm iston Garden club is a th in g of
the past, and w hile we are not given
to poetry to any great ex ten t, bits
from a little poem in the C hristian
Science Monitor seem to fit in rig h t
here, "A fairyland has vanished . .
here where the scented blossoms
made a fra g ra n t miracle and wove
brig h t magic. The tides of bloom
have gone.” It was a w onderful
show and would have been a credit
'to a much larger city. The first re
action of those who came in seemed
to be one of astonishm ent th a t H er
miston could produce a show of such
proportions. G reat credit is due to
Mrs. Doyle and her com m ittee for
th e ir work.

We read th a t sw eet alyssum will

o ut the summ er if one side is cut
back one week, th e o th er side the
next week, th e top the next, and so
on.

A speaker is to be a t th e V ert
Memorial hall in Pendleton Monday
evening, September 25, to tell how
to grow espalier trees and on rose
culture. We are unable to get the
exact date of the F reew ater Garden
club’s flower show, but those in te r
ested may w atch the papers from
our sister cities of Pendleton and
W alla W alla.
❖ ❖ ❖
The Echo G arden club flower show
was nicely staged and the flowers
beautiful and well w orth the trip to
see the fine displays and d rin k a cup
o’ tea w ith our neighbors.
❖ ❖ ❖
P erhaps it would be as well to en
courage the group in th e garden
club who are stro n g for the study
of flow er arrangem ent. We are
strongly converted to th is idea when
we read the follow ing clipping.
“ H itle r’s close friend. K annenberg,
can throw you a full-course d in n er
on h alf an h o u r’s notice, w hile his
wife delights the h eart of H itler
through h er expert arran g em en t of
flow ers.”
❖ ❖ ❖
Next m eeting of the G arden club
will be held on September 18. The
program says th a t there w ill be a
talk on “ Dahlias, V arieties and Cul
tu re ” by J. H. Reid; “The Autum n
Care of B iennials,” by Mrs. B. J. N a
tion and instructions on w hat to do
in the garden in September, given
by Mrs. H. K. Dean.
❖ ❖ <•
Send for catalogues now, for fall
planting, and get your name in for
th e b etter class of spring publica
tions. as they are full of colored Il
lu stra tio n s th a t are a big help in
choosing seeds.
❖ ❖
This is supposed to be th e ideal
tim e to make new and renovate old
lawns. A good dose of com mercial
fertilizer will benefit your grass plot
and the m an u factu rers advocate th is
tim e for its application.
