WILL PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT STAND PAT?
It is not Quiet on the Western Front any more.
With the conflagration raging in Europe one is re
minded of what they told us at the conclusion of the
World War — the war which was to end all wars.
We, the younger generation, were told that it was
necessary to make the sacrifices at that time in or
der that we might have order and peace in coming
years. To us it all seems like a bad dream.
We listened to President Roosevelt’s radio talk
a week ago Sunday, pleading that Americä face Eur
ope’s havoc with “national unity”, not selfish parti
sanship and his solemn promise to use his utmost ef
fort to keep the country neutral. Now that he has
called a special session of congress for September
21, we will be able to determine how sincere he was
in his statements.
One thing is certain, there will be a tense strug
gle over his proposal that the present embargo on
arms shipments to Europe’s belligérants be abolish
ed. It will be a real test for a “he-man” president.

club night Tuesday evening in the
G range hall. Miss Marie Tenny,
who received the G range scholarship
to summ er school In Corvallis, gave
an excellent report of studies pur
sued, campus life and recreational
activities during her two weeks a t
O. S. C. Other program num bers by
the T h rift Sew ing club included a
sk it by the Misses Marie and Betty
Tenny, V irginia Piccanso and V ir
ginia K rause; a tap dance, vocal so
lo and club history, all by Lila
Scalf; vocal solo by Frances Steph-
ens with piano accom panim ent by
her m other. Mrs. Piccanso; and pep
py group songs by th e club as a
whole. Other members of the club
include Carolyn Sm ith, Mildred
Molestead, L aura
Stephens
and
Elaine Hogg. This sewing club has
done some very good work under the
able leadership of Mrs. Stanley
Smith. In spite of the fact th a t they
only had two m onths in which to
complete projects and prepare exhi
bits for the county fair in H erm is
ton, th is club No, 13 finished 100
per cent. Refreshm ents were served
at the conclusion w ith Mrs. Fred B.
S tuart as hostess. At the business
meeting which followed the pro
gram, the G range voted to observe
“ Booster N ig h t” on October 10th.

G arden club attended the Flow er
Show in Hermiston Friday. Mrs. S.
P. Sm ith won first place in the
weed display with a clever arran g e
ment of worm weed In a silver vase.
Mrs. G. E. Greathouse also brought
home a blue ribbon won on the seven
varieties of annual petunias exhibi
ted. She also won on a vase of petu
nias in the artistic arran g em en t dis
play. Mrs. J. M. C henault, wife at
the superintendent a t Camp S tan
field, won much praise for her tu
berose begonias display.

rolled for work In N orthw estern
Business college in P ortland. Miss
Neva Behme, member of the same
class, will leave in about two weeks
to enroll as a student In secretarial
science at N orthw estern.

dau g h ter Ann have been a t the
home of her aunt. Mrs. W. G. W al
lace for the past two weeks during
the illness of Mrs. W allace.
Mr. and Mrs. L. O. H arlin spent
the week end at McEwen w ith th eir
son G arth who operates th e ir m ining
interests.

was held here Friday and Saturday.

was followed by a dance in the high
school gym nasium Saturday evening.
