W HY BE CARELESS W ITH FIRE?
The sage fire south of Hermiston Wednesday
noon was another fine example of someone’s care
less handling of a very destructive weapon — fire.
, Why it is that motorists traveling along the many
miles of tinder dry sage and brush land insist on
dropping lighted matches, cigarettes and cigars from
cars is beyond our knowledge. Just one ounce of
mental effort will convince an average mind of the
dangers involved.
A law which has been effect in Oregon for many
years reads: “It shall be unlawful for any one to
throw away any lighted tobacco, cigars, cigarettes,
matches, firecrackers or any lighted material, on any
forest land, private road, public highway or rail
road right of way within this state. * * * Any one
violating the provisions of this section shall be deem
ed guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction
thereof, shall be punished by a fine of not more than
$75.”
f
However, it is not a fear of this law which should
prompt an individual to be sure of putting out that
lighted object before tossing it out of the car. Com
mon sense tells us that one such foolish act can do
thousands of dollars worth of damage.
Let’s think twice.

For the informatipn of those who were puzzled
Wednesday as to why Old Glory was flying on the
flagpoles—June 14 is National Flag Day. The Con
tinental congress passed the resolution that gave
birth to the American Flag exactly 162 years ago on
Wednesday, June 14, 1777. The first flag had 13
stars and 13 stripes.
Lest we forget—Sunday is Father’s Day.
