A WORTHY ENTERPRISE
We had the opportunity to attend the Stanfield
CCC camp open house Sunday afternoon and were
pleased to note the beautiful surroundings, the well
kept barracks and the apparently well organized de
partments. We were greatly impressed with the en
tire arrangement at the camp and were reminded of
fraternity days at the university. There seemed to
be a general spirit of friendliness among the boys—a
type of friendship that can only be found among a
group of healthy, clean-cut fellows. Mr. F. D. R.
may get a lot of criticism from all corners but in this
instance it is money well spent. The boys are learn
ing how to live, how to cooperate, how to work and
how to be true blue citizens of this great United
States.
•
HONEST TO GOODNESS CHAMPS
A champ is a greater champ when honors do not
affect him. Such is the case of Charles Kik, Ken
neth Bensel and Harry Lewis, Hermiston boys who
won distinction at the San Francisco exposition on
their calves. The impressions that these boys left
on members of the Commercial club and guests
Tuesday night will linger long. Each of the boys
declined to accept all the honor and gave credit to
their parents and M. E. Knickerbocker, assistant
county agent. In our minds such a characteristic
is admirable and is bound to reward in more distinc
tion in time to come.
•
In each issue of The Herald readers will find a
column headed Garden Club chats. These items are
written by Mrs. Charles Taylor and are creating
much interest among amateur gardeners in this lo
cality. Mrs. Taylor is doing a splendid job and the
editors of The Herald wish to express their apprec
iation for her work.
•
What with the advancing cricket plague, it
might not be a bad stunt for our government agents
to sponsor a cricket-eating contest among our col
lege boys who are devouring anything from gold
fish to angleworms.
