th e speed of th e car is held a t a cer

the G reat Plains should result in a
decline in the ravages from wind
and dust, Charles van G order be
lieves.
Van G order is forester for an ex
perim ental project near D alhart for
the oil conservation service. Dur
ing the three years since the proj
ect was originated, a t the height of
the dust plague, tiny trees have
grown into 12-foot saplings.
Of
13,000 trees planted and receiving
“ m inim um c a re ” for test purposes,
80 per cent have survived.
Survivals range downward from
the 94 per cent of the thorny honey
locust. One Russian m ulberry has
grown since 1935 from 18 inches to
11 feet in height.
Little Care Required.
"The high percentages of surviv
als indicates that trees will live in
this sem iarid area with a m inim um
of c a re ," said Van Gorder. “ It has
been shown th at trees can be grown
into excellent windbreaks within a
short time. Suitable planting and
a few tim ely cultivations each year
furnish the keynote to successful
tree planting in w hat once was the
center of the Dust Bowl.”
Principal experim ents in use of
trees on the plains have been with
farm stead and field border wind
breaks. The farm stead type usually
consists of three rows of trees plant
ed on the north and west sides of
a farm home and other buildings to
break some saving on fuel in ad
dition to lessening the wind’s force.
Such w indbreaks for farm anim als
also increase their value and m ake
their feeding m ore profitable.
Single Row Breaks Wind.
The field border windbreaks are a
single row of trees, planted around
the edge of a field to reduce drifting
of the top soil.
Since m ost wind erosion on the
plains is started by loose earth on
the fields’ edge, the border trees re
duce such dam age m aterially. Van
G order also revealed th at the row of
5-year-old trees disrupted the force
of straight winds and directed the
force upward past the vulnerable
portions of the field.
Minimum care given the trees
consists of digging diversion ditches
to concentrate and hold the w ater
from rainfall. Som etim es the w ater
is diverted from roadside ditches.

A m erica apparently is forsaking the
sewing machine as a m eans of m ak
ing clothing, just as another genera
tion abandoned the spinning wheel,
according to a survey of 1,031 Iowa
farm women.
The survey, reported by Miss
Elizabeth Peterson, clothing special
ist, disclosed th at 80 per cent of the
clothing worn by the farm women
was ready-m ade. Only 40 per cent
of all dresses worn were m ade on
the fam ily sewing m achine and
m ost of these w ere cotton house
dresses, Miss Peterson said.
, Only 6 per cent of the coats and
11 per cent of the underw ear were
hom em ade, according to the survey.
The clothing specialist reported that
62 per cent of all dresses worn were
cotton. The sam e was true for hose,
indicating th at farm women do not
risk hazards of “ runners” and save
silk hose for special occasions.
The women averaged seven pairs
of hose a year, spending only $4 on
them . Of an average expenditure
of $64 for each of the 1,031 women,
$17 was spent for dresses and the
sam e amount for coats. They av
eraged two or three silk or rayon
dresses each, six cotton and one
wool.
An average of $2.33 was allotted
annually by each of the women for
their “ beauty budgets,” which in
cluded such item s as perm anent
waves, haircuts and cosmetics.
