NEW YORK— "F o r a co untry th a t

very slow ly," declared Mrs. F ra n k
lin D. Roosevelt a t the end of an
hour and a h alf interview w ith co
o p erative executives a t th e office of
T he Cooperative League of th U.S.A.
Mrs. Roosevelt dropped in a t th e
office of T he Cooperative League
S atu rd ay m orning, December 18, to
learn about th e progress of th e con
sum ers cooperative m ovem ent in
th is country. She expressed h er own
in te re st and added, “ The P resid en t
is also in terested in th e consum ers
cooperative m ovem ent and w ants to
know w h at is being done.”
Mrs. Roosevelt w atched in te n tly
w hile E. R. Bowen, g en eral secre
ta ry , sketched on an o u tlin e map of
th e U nited S tates th e locations and
fields of business of A m erica’s m a
jo r w holesale cooperatives, and then
discussed w ith Dr. Jam es P. A rbas-
se, president of The League, th e pro
gram and developm ent of coopera
tive m edicine.
“ If we are going to have adequate
m edical care for all th e people the
cooperatives provide an effective
w ay,” Mrs. Roosevelt observed.
T he Swedish cooperatives, w hich
have pioneered in th e field of mod
ern housing for low income groups,
have set an exam ple for Am erican
housing in w hich Mrs. Roosevelt
w as p a rtic u la rly interested.
J u s t before th e interview Mrs.
Roosevelt had received new s of the
d efeat of th e W ages and H ours bill.
She pointed o u t th a t the d efeat of
th e bill was ad d itio n al evidence of
th e failu re of farm and labor to rea
lize th e ir common in terest. “ It is
my hope,” she said, “ th a t eventually
farm and labor can be b ro u g h t to
geth er. It seems to me th a t th e con
sum ers cooperative m ovem ent is one
of the ways th is may be done.”
Mrs. Roosevelt said th a t she had
previously discussed the rep o rt of
th e Inqu iry on Cooperative E n te r
prise in E urope w ith members of
th e commission and was extrem ely
anxious to find out w h at progress
had been m ade in th e U.S.A.
NEW YORK— “ T he tro u b le w ith

“ W h at System of Medical Care

The Town M eeting heard th e case
for th ree types of m edical care. Dr.
A rth u r C. C hristie, p resid en t of th e
M edical Society of W ashington, D.
C., defended In d iv id u al M edicine as
now practiced. Dr. G. W. H aigh,
m em ber of th e W orchester, Mass.
M edical Society and a u th o r of the
firs t bill to found State-w ide Medi
cal Service presented th e case for
Socialized Medicine. Dr. R oberts
spoke for C ooperative Medicine.
In describing cooperative h ealth
associations,
Dr. R oberts pointed
out, “ A p rinciple of cooperative
m edicine is cooperative control. T his
is th e rig h t of th e individual to de
term in e w h at he is paying for, and
how he is p aying for it. Cooperative
control gives th e in dividual th e op

" ’Ijhe cooperatives can n o t expect
