possible haste to com plete the w ork
as soon as possible. If the w eather
perm its, it is hoped th a t th e lines
w ill be b u ilt w ith in th ree m onths.
C arloads of poles and w ire a re ex
pected to arriv e very soon. The
to ta l of the shipm ents w ill exceed
any Job of construction ever carried
out in U m atilla county. It is esti
m ated th a t 40 ca r loads of poles,
/w ire, tran sfo rm ers and m eters w ill
be used. The equipm ent of th e con
tr a c tin g firm w ill consist of num
e ro u s heavy trucks, pole v a u ltin g
and se ttin g m achinery, camp equip
m ent and shop m achinery for fast
work.
T his is one of th e la rg e st jobs of
th e kind in th e n o rth w est and th e
com pany is m ak in g special efforts
to m ake a record of good work. T he
com pany is u nder bonds of over
1100,000. Mr. Carmody, a d m in istra
to r of REA, has w ritte n them ap
proval of the set-up and urges th a t
th e w ork be done w ith o u t delays
custom ary to such u n d ertak in g s.
Only adverse w eath er conditions
can hinder operations.
The prelim in ary w ork in th e field
is being continued vigorously. The
crew of sta k in g engineers are now
follow ing th e lines to

and the system w ill be staked out
w ith in ten days. Most of the r ig h t of
w ay easem ents have been secured,
an d prospective users all along the
lines are sig n in g applications for
m em bership in th e association. Over
500 custom ers a re expected to be
listed by th e tim e construction be
gins, or w hen pple se ttin g reaches
th e ir home places. No service can
be supplied u n d er REA rules unless
application is form ally made.

m ay be done by th e ow ners provid
ed th a t they conform to sta te in
spection law s and each home m ust
be inspected by the sta te officers be
fore juice is tu rn ed on. If the ow ner
is unable to do his w ork, he may
h ire any electrical engineer he chos
es w ith whom he can m ake th e best
p rice for his job, and who holds a
s ta te certificate. A num ber of such
w orkm en or co n tracto rs will be in
th e field soliciting this business and
com petition w ill be su fficien t to
g u ara n tee fa ir prices.
A t th e office of the association
can be secured lite ra tu re on how to
do th e w ork, and any user can in
form him self as to his needs and
m ethods of w iring.
I t has also been arranged, thro u g h
J a y T. Pierson, a ssista n t county
ag e n t, and the sta te college exten
sion service, for a series of m eet
ings on th e use of electric appli
ances, w hich w ill be announced in
th e n ear fu tu re .
U nder th e o rig in a l plan, for
w hich funds w ere g ran ted by th e
REA for th e work, only 120 m iles
w ere included. Since th a t tim e oth er
users have applied for service and
th e board of d ircto rs a re now en
d eav o rin g to secure additio n al funds
for such extension. Two m onths ago
th e REA service in W ashington
found th a t th e lines laid out on the
p relim in ary m aps included 18 miles
m ore th a n funds had been provided
and ordered th e engineers to cu t off
th e 18 miles, w hich elim inated a
n um ber of prospective users on th e
ends of lines w here service required
a h alf m ile or m ore to one user.

a re hoped to be included by th e
board of directo rs and engineers be
fore th e system is com pleted. It is

farm er who desires service, m ake
