Carrie Jacobs Bond m ade her
su cc ess b e c a u s e circum stances
forced her to change from a h o u se
w ife to a business woman. She
w as born in Jan esville, Wisconsin,
in 1863. She liked m usic and stud
ied piano from childhood until she
m arried at the age of eighteen,
y h e n she w as twenty-five, she r e
iharried Dr. Frank L. Bond, who
took a sym pathetic interest in her
m usic and encouraged her to com
pose. She wrote one song, “ Is My
D olly D ead?” , at that tim e and it
w as accepted; but the work w as
m erely a hobby with her and she
d id not produce m ore. She devoted
her tim e and efforts to being a good
housew ife and m other for the Doc
to r and her little boy. Then, Dr.
Bond w as killed in an accident and
sh e w as left an invalid without

Carrie Jacobs Bond did not lose
heart. She rented a large house in
Chicago and took in roomers. She
m ade som e money as a dressm aker
and painting china. They were so
poor that her son had to go to
work soon thereafter as a delivery
boy. Am bitiously, she devoted all
her spare tim e to com posing songs.
Through financial support from a
w om an singer sh e started a sm all
m usic publishing house, writing the
w ords and m usic, and painting the
cover designs of the songs she pi int-
ed. She even prom oted the songs
herself, and little by little she won
su ccess. Today the songs she wrote
are rem em bered and sung through
out the world, "A P erfect D ay,’
“ I Love You Truly,” “ His Lullaby,’
“ My Son,” “ Do You R em em ber?”
and others.

started his career on a wild goose
ch a se for gold, but cam e back to
m ake his su ccess in the occupation
for which his schooling fitted him.
Key Pittm an, who w as born in
1872, attended law college in Ten
n essee. His career at that tim e
looked as though it m ight consist of
practicing law, obtaining an ap
pointm ent as district attorney, and
forging ahead in politics with the
United States senate as a goal. But
young P ittm an could not see it that
w ay, and the reason w as the Alas
kan gold rush in 1896. He rushed
up to the Klondike! And what hap
pened? Key Pittm an landed at Daw
son just ahead of the freeze alm ost
penniless. In Nom e it is said that

24 years. His greatest interest is
to better the position of silver, in
spired of course by the great pro
duction of this m etal in Nevada.
Stories of w ealth to be won in
foreign fields sound so much more
alluring sim p ly because tbe fields
represent the unknown and seem to
offer m ore adventure.
