An odd exhibit In the collection
of heating and lighting utensils in
the United States Museum at Wash
ington is an attractive little lantern
found in Spain many years ago and
said to have been used as a light
in hunting for snails.
Italians Used Many Woods
Walnut, chestnut, oak, pine, cy
press, elm, beech and poplar were
the woods from which Italian furni
ture of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth
centuries were made. Practically
all the finer pieces were walnut
"Vegetable Gardens” Put in Box
In Seventeenth century Quebec,
“vegetable gardens" were sold In
the markets each fall. Boxes of
earth In which rooted lettuce plants
were growing were bought by towns
people and stored In their cellars to
insure a supply of greens.
When Men Powdered Hair
The use of powder for men's hair
went out of fasbicn in 1794, but
some people continued to use it un
til as late as 1810. Doctors still
clung to wigs as late as 1819, but
they went out of fashion about 1805.
