MINORITY RULES
A handful of farmers turned out
last Friday to represent the mem
bership of more than 700 of the
Farm Bureau Co-operative at its an
nual meeting and election of offi
cers. One vote elected the director
from the Morrow county ditsrlct,
and there was a tie in two votes cast
from the Umatilla-Irrigon district.
These officers together with pres
ent board members, will direct the
business for the members’ organiza
tion for the next three years and
can it be said they are the choice
of the majority?
Nominations are made by mail
but that does not elect the director.
Members must be present at the an
nual meeting in order to cast a vote.
Perhaps this Is confusing in the
minds of many who think they are
voting when they are only nominat
ing. Or perhaps it is indifference
toward their own business. If it is
the former, some other arrangement
should be made in the method of
nominating and electing, but if it
is the latter the individual is re
sponsible for neglecting the direc
tion of an institution that is work
ing for his own interests.
Why isn’t it worth your time to
be present at the annual meetings?
Ralph Brownson deserves several
credit marks for his interest and
work in raising a very creditable
fund for the Red Cross flood relief
work. Through his efforts the re
sponse has been good and the
amount of the fund raised demon
strates the generosity of the com
munity through this expression of
practical sympathy for the sufferers
of the Ohio valley in their terrible
calamity.

"I would like to see a greater
variety of Irie grown here.” Mrs.
Dean said, "to insure bloom from
March until August, starting with
the dwarf Iris in the spring. The
colorings are delicate and beautiful
and have been developed from the
common Iris to a georgous plant.
It is necessary, however, that the
bulbs be separated at regular inter
vals to prevent congestion and de
terioration in the plant. The Japan
ese Iris does not do well here.
"Another plant that blooms late
in the fall and which has been de
veloped in shades of red- pink, lilac,
white and purple, is the Michaelmas
Daisy. One root will soon provide
the entire neighborhood with plants,
and because of such profuse increase
it is best to place the plant in a plot
large enough to take care of this ex
tra growth, or keep the roots dug
and separated each season.
