Rex Ellis was born in Iowa in 1893. After finishing
school he entered the automobile industry at Detroit.
His first job was with the Chalmers Company as au­
tomobile tester. He later travelled four years for
them. From the Chalmers Company, Mr. Ellis went
to the General Engineering Company of Detroit
where he was superintendent of tests. He came west
for Dodge Brothers Motor Car Company of Detroit
with headquarters in Seattle, his territory being
Washington. Oregon, Idaho and Montana. In 1920
Ellis came to Pendleton where he was associated
with Mr. Ed. Schiller. They built the building at the
corner of Water and Main streets and handled the
Dodge car. Later he handled the Buick. In 1931 he
invented and manufactured the Ellis Air cleaner. In
1936 he turned the Ellis Air Cleaner company over
to Thews and Ryder of Pendleton and is now Dist­
rict Agent in Eastern Oregon for the Occidental Life
Insurance Company.
Mr. Ellis has had excellent business experience as
an engineer and local business man, knowing the
needs of the district- and knows that if the farmers
prosper, we all prosper—we recommend him for

spent the week end visiting Mrs.

Mrs. W. O. Miller was rushed to
the St. Anthony’s hospital In Pen-
dleton early this week to be treated
for pneumonia.
Mrs. Jack Gear of near Fossil is
visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Clarence Powell.
Mrs. H. Seitz and son Harold, Mr.
and Mrs. George Montgomery and
son Loren, Orlin Lane and Mrs. L.
Maxwell spent Monday in Pendleton I
where Loren. Harold and Orlin took I
the train for San Francisco to join
the navy.
Al Moran spent Sunday in Spo­
kane.
The Misses Marguerite Cox and
June Higenbacker drove to ' Port­
land over the week end. They were
accompanied to The Dalles by Miss
Sara Rix and Miss Rosa Ricco, who
formerly taught here.
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hull. Mrs.
Walter Gardner and Miss Clara Cor­
rigan drove over the Weston. Toll­
gate and Elgin loop Sunday.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Sherrill of
| Seattle were visitors in Umatilla
Monday. Mr. Sherill formerly attend-
I ed high school here.
Evelyn Ford, who is attending
Eastern Oregon Normal, spent the I
week end visiting her parents, Mr.
and Mrs Roy Ford.
Marcellus Bray, who is attend­
ing high school in Walla Walla,
visited his parents. Mr. and Mrs.
W. T. Bray, over the week end.

Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Thomas made
a business trip to Pendleton Monday
and called on Mrs. W. O. Miller at
the hospital. Mrs. Miller was taken
to the hospital Sunday evening.
Mrs. Warner visited a few days
this week with Mrs. Jackson at Uma
tilla.
Mrs. John Brice and sister, Mrs.
Lillian Bennett, have moved onto
the Bennett place across from the
C. C. Kruse place, where they will
make their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hadley and
Stanton drove to Monument Satur­
day where Mrs. Hadley remained
for a visit. The two men returned
Sunday.
H. H. Weston was taken to Her­
miston General hospital late Satur­
day evening seriously ill from heart
disease. Lew Morgan will look af­
ter his property during his illness.
Mr. and Mrs. Nate Macomber
were guests at the Al Macomber
home in Heppner Saturday and Sun­
day.
Doyle Hubbell has rented the
Darr place and moved his family
last week. Mr. Darr has moved onto
the Mager house.
Claude Magers, who is working at
Kinzua, was on the project Satur­
day.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Strobel are
visiting at the W. Strobel home.
The high school students gave a
dinner Monday evening honor­
ing members of the North Central
Oregon School Masters' club. Repre­
sentatives from twelve different
schools attended. E. P. Dodd of Her­
miston was a guest speaker of the
club giving a talk on the future de­
velopment for navigation on the Co­
lumbia river. Mrs. Rogers. Morrow
County School Superintendent, was
also present.
Willard Tubbs of Arlington was a
dinner guest at the Guy Barlow
home Sunday.
The Home Economics club spon­
sored a masquerade at the Grange
hall Friday evening. Those who Jid
not mask were fined.
The Girls' Athletic association
presented a play entitled, "The Lit­
tle Clodhopper.” before a large audi­
ence Friday evening. The cast was
composed entirely of girls with Wil­
ma Myers as the “Little Clodhop­
per.” La Vern Baker was a society
lady, and Virginia Compton, was
her son. Jessie Petruzelli took the
part of a boarding house keeper and
Janet Gorham as the young man
who assisted her. Mildred Ayers was
a Mr. Green, a book agent, and Ada
May Harford, an actress. Each acted
their part exceptionally well and
with the “old time” costumes, they
kept the audience in a hilarious
mood.
THE PROPOSED constitutional amendment
' titled "Amendment Forbidding Prevention
or Regulation of Certain Advertising if Truth­
ful”, would, if enacted, invalidate all existing
laws controlling misleading, deceptive, inde­
cent and even fraudulent advertising. It utterly
fails to replace these present enactments with
adequate safeguards against vicious advertis­
ing practices.
