MRS. WIGGS, FAMILIAR
FIGURE OF LITERATURE.
Although Alice Hegan Rice wrote
her immortal American classic "Mrs.
Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch,” whteh
in the Paramount film version, based
on the play by Mrs. Rice and Anne
Crawford Flexner, comes Friday to
the Oasis Theatre, more than thirty
years ago, the people and the cir
cumstances which it depicts are etill
as universally true today as they
were then or will be two hundred
years hence.
Mrs. Rice, in the book which has
delighted millions of readers through
out the world, treated of the people
who are sometimes spoken of as "the
salt of the earth" and "the back
bone of the nation"; poor people, but
honest and thrifty, and people whose
innate good humor, courage, essen
tial earthliness and homespun phil
osophy find their counterparts in all
nations and at all times.
Mrs. Rice set her little drama in
a "Shantytown"—a group of stick
and burlap ahacks down by the rail
road tracks in an Ohio Community.
In the thirty-three years that have
since elapsed the "Cabbage Patch"
has disappeared, but a thousand oth
er "Cabbage Patches" have sprung
up all over the land.
Adapted from the play by Mrs.
Rice and Anne Crawford Flexner,
"Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch”
presents Pauline Lord, famous stage
actress making her film debut, in
the title role, and W. C. Fields, Za-
Su Pitts, Eevelyn Veneable and Kent
Taylor In the featured cast.

The soldiers of the king, not as
Kipling eang of them, but as Fran
cie Yeats-Brown described in his re
markable book "The Lives of a Ben
gal Lancer”—are the heroes of the
stirring, remarkable and colorful
picture of warfare and heroiem in
India which comee to the Oasis thea
tre Sunday and Monday. Produced
by Paramount, "The Lives of a Ben
gal Lancer" features Gary Cooper,
Franchot Tone, Richard Cromwell
and Sir Guy Standing in the leading
roles.
—
It is a picture replete with the
sounds and sights of the mysterious
East, as authentic as the Himalayas
themselves and equally thrilling.
And. although It has more to offer
in the pictorial sense than any re
cent Hollywood offering, "The Lives
of a Bengal Lancer” Is particularly
remarkable for its fine, dramatic
story of four great soldiers.
Cooper and Tone contribute the
outstanding portrayals of courage
ous and romantic campaigners to
"The Lives of a Bengal Lancer." And
the entire cast, including Monte
Blue. C. Aubrey Smith, Douglas
Dumbrille. Kathleen Burke end
Akim Tamiroff in the supporting
roles, render sterling performances.

The Lesson-Sermon also includ-
