The farmers and business men in
the three states, and later in west
ern Montana, can correct the situa
tion if they will organize and work
with determination. The unemploy
ment situation would insure the sup
port of labor in view of the jobs that
would be created by upper river
work.
Since this is the time for action,
and since the matter is being hand
led on a political basis, rather than
on a basis of economic need, politi-
cal measures are necessary. It should
be made clear to men like Senator
McNary that there are votes in east
ern Oregon as well as elsewhere, and
that while he was speaking for the
lower Columbia river development
the interests of the producer were
being ignored. Not even secondary
consideration was given.
Attempts to reduce freight rates
by dealing with commissions has
gotten the producer nowhere—they
regulate the public for the benefit of
the railroads.
